Baryshnikov Arts Center (BAC) announces the successful completion of its two-year, $1M Cage Cunningham Campaign to establish the Cage Cunningham Fund for artist fellowships, named for legendary artistic partners John Cage and Merce Cunningham. BAC's Artistic Director Mikhail Baryshnikov announced the inaugural Cage Cunningham Fellow, Alexei Lubimov, at an event on Monday, December 14, held at the Center. The event also served as the official naming of BAC's Studio 6A the John Cage and Merce Cunningham Studio. The Studio is the first physical space honoring Cage and Cunningham's unparalleled contribution to 20th century art and culture.
On Monday, November 9, 2015, the New-York Historical Society presented Ron Chernow and Lin-Manuel Miranda with the distinguished 2015 History Makers Award during its annual History Makers Gala at Cipriani Wall Street. The event featured a conversation with the honorees moderated by Charlie Rose and a special tribute to Richard Gilder, Trustee and Chairman Emeritus of the New-York Historical Society. During the evening, Ballet Hispanico honored Ballet Hispanico Board President and President and COO of Palladium Equity Partners David Pérez and Milena Alberti-Pérez, SVP and Head of Global Corporate Finance at Penguin Random House, with the Civic Inspiration Award. Ben Rodriguez-Cubeñas, Chair of Ballet Hispanico's Leadership Council and program director for the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, was honored with the Nuestra Inspiración Award. Proceeds from the evening will benefit the creation of new Company works, need-based financial aid and merit scholarships in the Ballet Hispanico School of Dance, and community arts education programs.
New York, NY – The Baryshnikov Arts Center (BAC) continues its 10th anniversary celebratory season with three concerts in April, reflecting BAC's expanded series of music programming for 2015. The weeklong celebration begins Monday, April 6 at 7:30pm, with one of BAC's signature events – a BAC Salon – in the Howard Gilman Performance Space, featuring the chamber music of Berio, Cage, and Mozart in an intimate salon setting. On Wednesday, April 8 at 7:30pm, composer and jazz pianist Stephen Prutsman will perform the entirety of his album Passengers for the first time ever, in another BAC Salon in the Howard Gilman Performance Space. The final performance of the week, on Saturday, April 11 at 8pm in the Jerome Robbins Theater, features the Latvian National Choir, hailing from BAC Artistic Director Mikhail Baryshnikov's birthplace of Riga and bringing to New York a program that includes music by Arvo Pärt, Grammy nominee Ugis Praulins, and the U.S. premieres of works by acclaimed Latvian composers Jekabs Janchevskis, Gundega Smite, and Raimonds Tiguls. The Latvian National Choir last appeared in New York as part of the 2010 White Light Festival at Lincoln Center, in performances The New York Times described as “ravishing.”

VIP guests enjoyed cocktails, preferred seating, and a gift bag in addition to the performance and post-event reception. The performance featured new work by Brian Reeder created for American Ballet Theatre's Isabella Boylston with New York City Ballet's Chase Finlay and Amar Ramasar, Paul Taylor Dance Company in its first appearance at the benefit, Charles 'Lil Buck' Riley performed with students from National Dance Institute, and included the NYC premiere of Justin Peck's Sea Change. Held last night at the Waldorf Astoria New York, the event raised more than $6 million - the highest amount raised at a gala in the organization's history. For the third consecutive year, ABC news anchor, author and talk show host Barbara Walters served as master of ceremonies at the gala, while the event honored Macy's Inc.'s Chief Merchandising Officer Jeff Gennette, Diana DiMenna, noted philanthropist and her husband Joseph DiMenna, managing director of Zweig-DiMenna Associates Inc.
