It would certainly be an interesting experience for modern playgoers to travel back in time and see how The Merchant of Venice was first received by Shakespeare's audiences.  Those only familiar with the play's famous, 'Hath not a Jew eyes? Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions...' speech, spoken by the moneylender Shylock, might just assume the author meant it to be a drama attacking anti-Semitic tendencies of the day.

Actor Dennis Haysbert recently joined the cast of David Mamet's Broadway play RACE. On June 25, he was interviewed on 'Today' and talked about the play. During the interview, Haysbert hinted that him and Mamet (playwright and director of RACE), may be looking to collaborate on a television project in the future.

Eddie Izzard to Replace Spader in RACE on Broadway

The New York Times is reporting that Eddie Izzard will take over for James Spader in RACE beginning on June 21st. This now completes the new cast along with Afton C. Williamson and Dennis Haysbert along with Richard Thomas who will remain with the show.

Williamson, who made her Broadway debut in Joe Turner's Come and Gone, will take over the role of 'Susan' from Kerry Washington, beginning Tuesday, June 15th. Williamson made a striking impression on the creative team when, as understudy, she replaced Kerry Washington the one night Kerry missed a performance, due to a previous obligation to go to the White House as part of the President's national Arts Council.
