Joyce DiDonato and David Hyde Pierce to Host Ninth Annual Opera News Awards, 4/13

Grammy Award-winning mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato and Tony and Emmy Award-winning actor David Hyde Pierce will take a star turn together when they co-host the Ninth Annual Opera News Awards, set to take place on Sunday, April 13, 2014, in the Grand Ballroom of The Plaza Hotel in New York City. They will be joined by a distinguished line-up of presenters – Luca Pisaroni, Susan Graham, Renata Scotto, Eva Wagner-Pasquier and Francesca Zambello – who will pay tribute to five superb artists who have made an invaluable contribution to the art form: the late director Patrice Chéreau, tenor Juan Diego Flórez, mezzo-soprano Christa Ludwig,bass-baritone James Morris, and soprano Nina Stemme. First introduced in 2005, the Opera News Awards gala dinner, which features the hosts and presenters speaking about the awardees and introducing video performance clips, has become one of the most anticipated opera events of the season: an evening of celebration, appreciation, reuniting and celebrity-spotting that is without parallel in the industry.

Tribute to Witold Lutoslawski with ACME and Steven Stucky Set for Tonight at Symphony Space

Tonight, December 13 at 7:30 pm, Symphony Space presents a centennial tribute to pioneering Polish composer Witold Lutoslawski (1913 - 1994). The American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME) will perform a selection of his chamber works, along with pieces by Steven Stucky, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and author of the critical biography Lutoslawski and His Music. The concert will be streamed live on Q2 Music, WQXR's online station devoted to contemporary classical music, and will include a conversation with Stucky and Symphony Space's Artistic Director, Laura Kaminsky.

New Harriet Tubman Opera to Preview at Harlem's Schomburg Center, Today

AOP (American Opera Projects), and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture will co-present an evening of scenes from Nkeiru Okoye's folk opera Harriet Tubman: When I Crossed That Line to Freedom that tells of how a young girl born in slavery, becomes Harriet Tubman, the legendary Underground Railroad conductor. The musical excerpts will be followed by an artist Q&A moderated by WQXR's Terrance McKnight. The concert will be presented today, December 9, 2013 at 6:30 PM at the Langston Hughes Auditorium: 515 Malcolm X Boulevard, New York, NY 10037-1801.

All-Star Orchestra Series Gets 11/19 DVD Release

Naxos of America will release all eight episodes of Gerard Schwarz's All-Star Orchestra on four DVDs on Tuesday, November 19, 2013. Featuring two complete programs on each disc, the DVDs will be available for individual sale from Naxos and on Amazon for $19.99 each. All-Star Orchestra, the made-for television classical music concert series featuring leading musicians from 22 states, is currently being broadcast on public television stations across the country (check local listings). The series is the winner of the 2013 Deems Taylor Television Broadcast Award for outstanding broadcast and new media coverage of music. NY Philharmonic's 'Insights Series' Now Free; 2013-14 Lineup Kicks Off Today

Beginning with the 2013-14 season, the New York Philharmonic's Insights Series - in which artists and experts will explore some of the season's themes and concerts - will now be free, and take place at the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center. This season's events will include discussions with Concertmaster Glenn Dicterow during his farewell season (TODAY, October 23); composer-conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen and violinist Leila Josefowicz (October 28), who will discuss Mr. Salonen's Violin Concerto, written for Ms. Josefowicz (which they will perform with the Philharmonic in its New York Concert Premiere, October 30-November 5); Music Director Alan Gilbert and Executive Director Matthew VanBesien on the state of the Philharmonic (March 3, 2014); The Mary and James G. Wallach Artist-in-Residence Yefim Bronfman (May 20, 2014), who will talk about Beethoven's piano concertos (which he will perform during The Beethoven Piano Concertos: A Philharmonic Festival, June 11-28, 2014); and discussions relating to the NY PHIL BIENNIAL, the details of which will be announced at a later date. All Insights Series events begin at 7:30 p.m.

Gerard Schwarz's ALL-STAR ORCHESTRA Wins 2013 Deems Taylor Television Broadcast Award

Music Director Gerard Schwarz's All-Star Orchestra, the made-for-television classical music concert series featuring leading musicians from top orchestras across the country, has been awarded the 2013 Deems Taylor Television Broadcast Award for outstanding broadcast and new media coverage of music. The award will be presented on November 14, 2013 to Mr. Schwarz, Video Producer John Forsen and Executive Director Paul Schwendener. All-Star Orchestra will commence with the second half of its programming on NYC's THIRTEEN and Philadelphia'sWHYY beginning on October 6 at 12:30 p.m. (check local listings). Episode five, "Relationships in Music," features Brahms' Academic Festival Overture and Schumann's Symphony no. 3,Rhenish. The series will conclude with episode eight, "Mahler: Love, Sorrow & Transcendence," on October 27.

Demetrius Spaneas, Michael Harrison and More Set for Annunciation Church's 'Faith & Culture' 2013 Lecture Series

The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church presents 'Faith & Culture,' a ministry to inaugurate its first major programming endeavor this fall: a music-based lecture series titled Tastemakers & Pioneers curated by Marina Harrison. Serving to introduce the community to many creative disciplines of the humanities, 'Faith & Culture' focuses on music, literature, history, film and theatre, and fine art.
