Kurs) have announced that the rebellious students from the acclaimed Deaf West production of Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik's Spring Awakening, directed by Michael Arden and choreographed by Spencer Liff, will transfer with the musical to Broadway. Four new swings join the Broadway company.
With its contemporary folk score and soulful coming-of-age story, Spring Awakening literally rocked Broadway when it premiered nine years ago and redefined rock musicals with its provocative exploration of the journey from adolescence to adulthood. The show has been making headlines lately with the just announced return to Broadway this fall for its first-ever revival in a ground-breaking production from Deaf West Theatre. But this July, Toronto's Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts will offer its own twist on the iconic musical, under the direction of Anne-Marie Donovan and music direction of Lily Ling (music director, John and Jen, Off-Broadway Revival). Ken Davenport, Cody Lassen, Hunter Arnold and Deaf West Theatre (Artistic Director David J. Kurs) announced today that Spring Awakening, the Tony Award-winning Best Musical of 2007, will play a strictly limited Broadway engagement at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre (256 West 47th Street) with previews beginning on Tuesday, September 8 and opening night set for Sunday, September 27. The show will run 18 weeks only, through Saturday, January 9, with no extension possible. It will be performed simultaneously in American Sign Language and spoken English by a cast of 27. Deaf West was last represented on Broadway with the triumphant production of Big River in 2003.
Just last month, BroadwayWorld brought you news that Spring Awakening might be heading back to New York. And now an Equity casting notice has confirmed that Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater's musical is officially headed to NYC, but no word yet on whether the show will end up on Broadway.
