Review: MAZEPPA, Grange Park Opera

Even ardent opera fans may struggle to recall the story or the score for Mazeppa. Based on a poem by Pushkin, Tchaikovsky's opera has been unjustly overshadowed by his Eugene Onegin. Last staged at the London Coliseum in 1984, Grange Park Opera have landed a coup by engaging the English National Opera orchestra to play for David Pountney’s excellent new production.

Review: THE MAGIC FLUTE, London Coliseum

It’s odd to watch an opera where the actual opera is an afterthought. At least that’s how it feels watching Simon McBurney’s The Magic Flute. His revival production sizzles with circus spectacle, high tech pageantry, and boundary breaking chutzpah. But underneath it all you’ll be hard pressed to find the warmth of a beating heart.

Welsh National Opera Announces Spring Season

Welsh National Opera presents a feast of Italian operas from three of the greatest composers for its Spring season in Bristol. The season, entitled Rabble Rousers, will feature a new production of Verdi's La forza del destino alongside revivals of Puccini's Tosca and Mozart's Don Giovanni.

Cast Set for 64th Wexford Festival Opera

Artistic Director David Agler today announced the cast for the main evening operas in the forthcoming Wexford Festival, opening Wednesday, 21 October. A mixture of new and familiar voices makes up the 64-member company, comprising 20 principal roles, 32 chorus-members and 10 dancers. They hail from several different countries, including Ireland, Britain, South Africa, Canada, US, France, Italy, Australia and Malta. When including the creative teams, production team, orchestra and crew, the full company of this year's Festival is likely to be in excess of 200.

REDCAT Welcomes SCREAM Festival, 11/5

SCREAM, the Southern California Resource for Electro-Acoustic Music, returns to REDCAT for its annual SCREAM Festival, a series of yearly programs curated by Barry Schrader. This year's event features NoiseFold, a live cinema, installation and electronic music performance group founded by artists David Stout and Cory Metcalf. SCREAM Festival: NoiseFold will be held at the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater on Friday, November 5, 2010 at 8:30 pm.
