International Performance Conference Joins Artists from 31 Countries, 9/30-10/3

September 30th through October 3rd, 350 artists, activists, young people, educators, scholars, practitioners and business people from 31 countries, all who use performance in their work as a new way of relating to, transforming and understanding the world, will gather at the All Stars Project headquarters at 543 West 42nd Street for the Performing the World Conference; Can Performance Change the World? The All Stars Project and the East Side Institute for Group and Short Term Psychotherapy are co-sponsors of the conference.

Catherine Shaw's THIRST: MEMORY OF WATER Closes Its Curtains at La MaMa, 4/11

Puppet theater has an uncanny ability to take on big themes, and such was when Jane Catherine Shaw, co-director of the Voice 4 Vision Puppet Festival, takes on world drought in 'Thirst: Memory of Water,' her newest puppet theater work. It's a big theme, but Shaw is trying to make it manageable by concentrating on themes of women and water because, as she writes, 'around the world women are carrying (literally) the burden of maintaining life by walking for water.' The play will end its run at La MaMa on April 11 in its First Floor Theater.

The New York Times is reporting the good news that among the recent tax ideas that New York Gov. David Paterson eliminated on Wednesday from his 2009-2010 state budget proposal was an 8 percent levy on theater tickets that Broadway industry leaders had been vocal about and fought fiercely.
