Now onstage at the Tennessee Performing Arts Center's Andrew Jackson Hall through Sunday, Shrek the Musical could be dismissed by some as merely a theme park version of an animated film (which, I must confess, I've never seen), but if you approach it with your eyes wide open - and perhaps more importantly, your heart wide open - you're likely to see it for what is: A fast-paced, hugely entertaining homage to fairies, their tales and all the fairy dust that makes musical theater so completely transformative and exhilarating.
The magic of the "Shrek" movies is phenomenally captured in this thrilling theatrical experience which will delight children and adults alike. The brilliance of Shrek the Musical is creative staging with a constant flow of original techniques bring Shrek and his fairy-tale friends to the stage. Overflowing with fun, laughs and incredible costumes, this musical surpassed all expectations.
An entirely new work, SHREK THE MUSICAL is based on the story and characters from William Steig's book Shrek!, as well as the DreamWorks Animation film Shrek, the first chapter of the Shrek movie series. SHREK THE MUSICAL tells the story of a swamp-dwelling ogre who goes on a life-changing adventure to reclaim the deed to his land. Joined by a wise-cracking donkey, this unlikely hero fights a fearsome dragon, rescues a feisty princess and learns that real friendship and true love aren't only found in fairy tales. The national tour of the production recently kicked off and is now underway. Click below for a first listen of the brand new song - created entirely for the touring production - the has just been released on the show's facebook page!
SHREK THE MUSICAL, which plays the Orpheum Theatre December 1, 2010 through January 2, 2011, kicks off the 2010-2011 Best of Broadway series under the direction of Carole Shorenstein Hays. Tickets go on sale Sunday, October 3.
The original animated film SHREK was a kind of adult fairytale, though it was obviously aimed squarely at the youth market as well, successfully spawning a franchise with sequels and merchandising galore. So, it should come as no surprise that Dreamworks would opt to try their luck on stage with a musical version of their blockbuster hit. Happily, like the original, it's a cute and amusing production that will play equally well to children and their parents, who will certainly appreciate some of the more grown-up humor the book and lyrics provide. The current production of SHREK THE MUSICAL, which is playing at the Fox Theatre, is a cleverly mounted show with fine performances and dazzling displays of technical wizardry.
DreamWorks Theatricals and Neal Street Productions, Ltd. are pleased to announce that David F. M. Vaughn has recently joined the National Tour of SHREK THE MUSICAL in the role of the vertically challenged villain Lord Farquaad. He is joined by Justin W. Shuffler, who will play the Big Bad Wolf.
