Since the 2015-16 Season at the Durham Performing Arts Center has wrapped up, I decided to give you guys a little recap. While there were several different offerings that range from overhyped (A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder) to thought-provoking, yet a little divisive (Cabaret) to entertaining (42nd Street) to compelling (If/Then), these are some of my top picks of the season.

BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL might not have the same soundtrack as Beyonce's recent LEMONADE album, but there's enough dirty laundry aired in this musical biography to rival Ms. Knowles' infamous troubles. 'So Far Away,' 'Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,' 'The Locomotion,' 'It's Too Late,' and 'You Make Me Feel (Like A Natural Woman)' are just a few of the many hit songs that captivated audiences on Dallas' opening night of BEAUTIFUL at the Winspear Opera House. However, it wasn't just the songs that stirred the crowd, but the heart-wrenching story of Ms. King, a middle-class New York teenager who found fame and fortune in the public eye, yet kept a great deal of secret pain in her private life.

The Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts today announced that subscriptions to the ninth annual series of Kravis On Broadway, which will present a record number of seven smash hits from the Great White Way, including several multiple Tony Award®winners, will go on sale to the public on Friday, June 17, at 10 am.

STARS IN THE ALLEY, presented by United Airlines, took place just last week in Shubert Alley. Hosted by Tony nominee Sean Hayes and Mo Rocca, Broadway's best once again turned out for the annual performance - including Chilina Kennedy, who performed 'Natural Woman' from BEAUTIFUL.

Producers Paul Blake and Sony/ATV Music Publishing announced that Abby Mueller has nabbed the title role in the First National Tour of Beautiful-The Carole King Musical, the smash hit musical about the early life and career of the legendary and groundbreaking singer/songwriter. Mueller's sister, Jessie Mueller, won the Tony Award in 2014 for Best Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of King in the show's Broadway production. Unsurprisingly, the crowd at Orlando's Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts for the Opening Night performance of the Tony-winning musical BEAUTIFUL, the final show of the 2015-2016 Broadway in Orlando season, was filled with baby boomers. Not only does that age group line up with traditional theatergoing demographics, but it also encompasses the generations that grew up listening to the music of the legendary songwriter and reluctant performer, Carole King, the show's inspiration. However, the musical, playing through Sunday, May 8th, will almost certainly appeal to music (and musical) lovers of all ages. In fact, the timeless tunes, inventive staging, and dynamite performances make BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL one of the most universally appealing shows in the Dr. Phillips Center's brief year and a half history.
