Photo Flash: First Look At THEY PROMISED HER THE MOON At The Old Globe

The Old Globe today announced that the West Coast premiere of Laurel Ollstein's They Promised Her the Moon has been extended by popular demand and will run through May 12, 2019. The first of two shows in the 2018-2019 Season developed in the Globe's Powers New Voices Festival, it wowed Festival audiences with the story of the powerful forces that kept one woman from reaching orbit. Directed by Giovanna Sardelli (the Globe's The Whipping Man and Somewhere), They Promised Her the Moon runs April 6 - May 12, 2019 in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, part of the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. Preview performances run April 6-10. 

Cast Of Ken Ludwig's THE GODS OF COMEDY Announced At The Old Globe

The Old Globe today announced the cast and creative team as comic playwright Ken Ludwig, who delighted Globe audiences with Robin Hood! and Baskerville, returns with a hilarious world premiere: Ken Ludwig's The Gods of Comedy, directed by Amanda Dehnert (West Side Story at Carnegie Hall, world premieres of Kate Hamill's Pride and Prejudice and Ludwig's Baskerville). Presented in association with McCarter Theatre Center, The Gods of Comedy will run May 11 - June 16, 2019 on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage, Old Globe Theatre, Conrad Prebys Theatre Center, opening on May 16. For many San Diegans, their ability to understand and appreciate the wonders of the Bard during our Summer Shakespeare Festival has increased exponentially since they joined us for Thinking Shakespeare Live! Part of The Old Globe's ongoing commitment to serve the public good by hosting programs that make theatre matter to more people, Thinking Shakespeare Live! is consistently one of our most popular offerings, a 90-minute exploration of the language of Shakespeare led by the Globe's Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein and assisted by three professional classical actors. 

BWW Review: THE LA JOLLA MUSIC SOCIETY'S JAZZ IN THE KEY OF ELLISON at The Balboa Theatre

The La Jolla Music Society continued its eclectic 50th anniversary season with 'Jazz in the Key of Ellison,' a multimedia concert at the Balboa Theatre featuring music made popular by author Ralph Ellison's favorite artists including Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and Thelonious Monk. Ellison loved jazz. He often wrote about it, and it plays an important role in Invisible Man, his best known work. Jazz influenced his approach to life. He said, 'The real secret of the game is to make life swing.'

Applications Now Available For The Old Globe's 2019 Pam Farr Summer Shakespeare Studio

As part of The Old Globe's ongoing commitment to serve the public good by hosting programs that serve all of San Diego County, applications are now available online for the 2019 Pam Farr Summer Shakespeare Studio for high school students. Applications will be accepted through Sunday, March 31. The four-week program is a unique opportunity for rising 9th - 12th graders and recent graduates not only to develop foundational skills for reading, interpreting, and performing Shakespeare's plays, but also to cultivate their own artistic voice through storytelling and creating original material.

La Jolla Music Society Announces Opening Gala Concerts At The Conrad

La Jolla Music Society, one of the West Coast's foremost performing arts institutions, has announced the launch of its greatly-anticipated, cutting edge new home, The Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center (The Conrad), with three illustrious opening-weekend concerts. With ceremonies, performances, and receptions being held Friday through Sunday, April 5, 6, and 7, 2019, the variety and caliber of these festivities in celebration of its $82 million, 49,000-square-foot complex reflect La Jolla Music Society's invaluable positioning in the classical music world at large, and especially of its immeasurable significance to performing arts programming on an international scale. 

The Old Globe Announces New Board Members For 2019

The Old Globe's Annual Meeting was held on Monday, February 4 on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center. Old Globe Board Chair Nicole A. Clay welcomed the members of The Old Globe Board of Directors along with donors, subscribers, and guests, and announced the newly elected Directors serving three-year terms. Globe senior staff members presented highlights of the 2018 fiscal year, and Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein and Managing Director Timothy J. Shields spoke about the future of the Globe and its place in the San Diego community. Both a welcome reception prior to the meeting and a celebratory gathering following were catered by The Prado at Balboa Park for the Board of Directors and all attendees.

Opal Alladin, Keith Powell & More Will Lead TINY BEAUTIFUL THINGS at the Old Globe

Previews run November 3 - November 7. Opening night is Thursday, November 8 at 7:00 p.m. The Grinch isdirected by James Vasquez, with book and lyrics by Timothy Mason and music by Mel Marvin. The original production of Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas! was conceived and directed by Jack O'Brien with additional lyrics by Theodor S. Geisel, additional music by Albert Hague, and original choreography by John DeLuca.

Britta Johnson's LIFE AFTER to Hold Industry Readings Featuring Mamie Parris & More

The Old Globe in association with Yonge Street Theatricals will present a by-invitation-only industry reading of the new musical Life After on Thursday, December 6 at 2:00 p.m. and Friday, December 7 at Noon at Ripley Grier Studios in New York City. The reading will help the creative team prepare for the musical's upcoming American premiere this winter at The Old Globe in San Diego, where it will run from March 22 to April 28, 2019. 

Plays by Young Writers Festival Celebrates Student Playwrights

Playwrights Project will produce its 34th annual festival of Plays by Young Writers, sponsored by the Sheila and Jeffrey Lipinsky Family Fund, at The Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre in the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center at The Old Globe on January 10 - January 26, 2019. The festival will feature winning scripts from Playwrights Project's California Young Playwrights Contest for ages 18 and under.
