I talked to Bayou City Theatrics' Luke Hamilton, Jane Volke, and Colton Berry about the BctEDU program and the company's foray into the tiny town of FOOTLOOSE.
It's a Halloween show that you take your friends to, get tipsy, then curse and throw things at the people on the stage. On the other hand, I don't drink, I go to bed at 9 pm, and I still had a good time.
The name on everybody?s lips is... CHICAGO! Bayou City Theatrics? gritty, earthy, yet still razzle-dazzled production packed the house on opening weekend and has extended through October 26th due to audience demand!
Returning to Houston to reprise the iconic leading role, Tye Blue, straps on his spiked
heels once more as Dr. Frank'N'Furter. The wildly talented cast includes Houston actors Christian Quiroga and Derrien Kellum as Brad and Janet, Hannah Miller and Colton Berry as Riff Raff and Magenta, BCT newcomer R. "Chibbi" Orduña as Columbia, Heather Hall as Eddie/Dr. Scott and Luke Hamilton as Rocky.
It's intimate, poignant and raw. There's only one weekend left to see Bayou City Theatrics' limited engagement of THE LAST 5 YEARS. Created by Jason Robert Brown, with some inspiration from his personal life story, the 2 character musical chronicles the beginning and ending of a young couple's relationship. The characters are not given a chance to be really likeable, but they certainly are understandable.
I finish the series with Jane Volke - 'Producer, Music Director, Table Bracer, Staple Gunner, Public Relations Liaison, Set Builder, Curtain Hanger Upper, Costumer, Water Bottle thrower outer, Marketing Rep., Child Wrangler, Lighting Tech, Floor Painter, Copy Expert, Hole Puncher Extraordinaire, Stage Hand, Window Washer, Dog Walker, Extension Cord Wrapper, Ceiling Painter, Banner Hanger, and Wine Drinker' at Bayou City Theatrics. We discuss THE LAST FIVE YEARS and her definition of 'high-art, conceptualized pieces of theatre.'
Jamie is a budding novelist who has everything planned out, with happiness and success at the tip of his fingers. Cathy is an aspiring actress who cannot catch a break. The couple seems to fit together perfectly, like an interpersonal jigsaw puzzle. Jamie has found his 'Shiksa Goddess' and Cathy is finally 'A Part of That.' But are they prepared for the inevitable ups and downs that come with marriage?
THE LAST FIVE YEARS plays a limited engagement with five performances, September 5, 6 at 8:00 p.m., September 7 at 5:00 p.m. as well as September 12 and 13 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase at www.BayouCityTheatrics.com or at the door, though BCT suggests advanced purchases, to secure admission to their intimate venue.
In part four of the series, I finish my conversation with Artistic Director Colton Berry. We define high-art conceptualized pieces (according to Colton), discuss the theatre prodigy's (he's been directing since was twelve) journey from Shenandoah, Virginia to Houston, Texas, and talk American Idol and believing in yourself.
LORD OF THE FLIES, William Golding's classic novel, comes to the stage this September courtesy of Bayou City Theatrics. An all female cast gives a whole new perspective on the savagery of man, proving that animal instinct lives in the hearts of us all. Using beautiful imagery and an original score, this production brings the stunning detail of the novel to life.

In part three of the Bayou City Theatrics series, I talk to actress and frequent company member, Miatta Lebille. Currently, she is in BCT's production of TRIASSIC PARQ where she appears as T-Rex 2, the unfortunate soul whose penis-sprouting ways wreak havoc on her community.
In the second installment of the series, I continue my conversation with Artistic Director Colton Berry. This interview is a deep cut in the metaphorical album of this series. Berry provides me with more insight into BCT's artistic goals in this discussion about the theatre's currently running production TRIASSIC PARQ. I also ask Berry the tough questions. Just what is his favorite color and flavor of Skittle? To find out, read below.
I start off simple in part one of this series. I talk to Colton Berry, Artistic Director of Bayou City Theatrics, about his role as costume and set designer in, what I found to be, an incredibly effective and successful production of TARZAN.
Overwhelmingly, TARZAN is an amazing production. Everyone involved is to be commended for cooking up the rarest of children's theatre confections. A production dense enough for the sophisticated tastes of the most discerning adults and children in the audience and sugary enough for those still in the early stages of cognitive development - me and all the three-year-olds.
Whether you call it trash, rubbish, or junk BROOKLYN: THE MUSICAL has tons of it and in a great way. With book, music, and lyrics by Mark Schoenfeld, and Barri McPherson, this musical takes place as a story within a story on a street corner under the Brooklyn Bridge. The inspiration for the show comes from real life experience of Schoenfeld.
Bayou City Theatrics presents TARZAN® - live on stage! BCT introduces their new 'GROWING STAGES' program - theater for young audiences - with TARZAN the stage musical based on the Disney film. Bring the kids to this jungle adventure and experience the story of Tarzan like never before! Featuring breathtaking storytelling through dance and song, thecast of professional actors and singers brings Edgar Rice Burroughs? classic tale to life, starringLuke Hamilton/Colton Berry in the role of Tarzan, Tori Shoemaker as Jane, Liz Tinder/Nicole Vazquez and Taylor McWhorter/Hal St.Louis-Farrelly as his ape parents Kala and Kerchek (respectively), and Derrien Kellum/LaKiaya Evans as Tarzan?s best friend Terk.
