Bayou City Theatrics Opens 2014 Season with Jason Robert Brown's THE LAST FIVE YEARS, Now thru 9/13

By:

Jamie is a budding novelist who has everything planned out, with happiness and success at the tip of his fingers. Cathy is an aspiring actress who cannot catch a break. The couple seems to fit together perfectly, like an interpersonal jigsaw puzzle. Jamie has found his "Shiksa Goddess" and Cathy is finally "A Part of That." But are they prepared for the inevitable ups and downs that come with marriage?

An intimate look at love and marriage, THE LAST FIVE YEARS chronicles a young couple's journey over the course of five tumultuous years. Brought to life by Jason Robert Brown's (Songs for a New World, 13) fourteen songs, ranging from gut- wrenching to infectiously comedic, this soaring musical holds a magnifying glass to the ups and downs of modern relationships. Starring as Cathy, Hannah Morgen (last seen at The Kaleidoscope as Paradice in Brooklyn) brings a uniquely modern, raw flavor to the piece, with vocal chops to boot. As Jamie, Colton Berry (also last seen in Brooklyn as Streetsinger), nuances the character with depth and fervor.

Through heavily juxtaposed perspectives, THE LAST FIVE YEARS, utilizes a unique plot vehicle, challenging its audiences to look deeply into the cogs and springs that keep relationships ticking. Jamie begins his journey linearly, re-living the five years from start to finish, while Cathy begins at the end, traveling from the last plot-point to the first. Only at the pinnacle, their wedding, do the two characters ever land in the same time and space.

With a film incarnation on its way (starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan) Bayou City Theatrics brings THE LAST FIVE YEARS live to Houston as the official opening of their 2014-2015 Mainstage Season. Immediately following in the line-up is an all-female production of William Golding's LORD OF THE FLIES and a brand new production of CHICAGO, as well as BCT's annual staging of RICHARD O'BRIEN'S THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW. THE LAST FIVE YEARS kicks off an incredible season of theatre, downtown, at Houston's first "Off-Broadway" theater, The Kaleidoscope.

THE LAST FIVE YEARS is a limited engagement with five performances (irony?), tonight, September 5 and tomorrow, September 6 at 8:00 p.m., September 7 at 5:00 p.m. as well as September 12 and 13 at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase at www.BayouCityTheatrics.com or at the door, though BCT suggests advanced purchases, to secure admission to their intimate venue.

The Kaleidoscope is located at 705 Main, Suite B, with its entrance on Capitol Street, just down the block from The Flying Saucer. Up-close parking is available in BCT's official garage, the SAKS garage, on the corner of Capitol and Fannin.
