The 17th annual Tribeca Film Festival, presented by AT&T, today announced its lineup of 55 diverse and engaging short films in competition, including 29 world premieres. The selected shorts include a cross-section of international and U.S. filmmakers and were curated from a record 4,754 submissions. For the second year running, 40% of the selections are directed by female filmmakers. The short films will be presented in 10 distinct competition programs, which consist of five narrative, three documentary, one animation, and one hybrid program. The program will also include special screenings and the 12th annual Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival, sponsored by Mohegan Sun. The Shorts Film program, sponsored by Nutella®, runs throughout the Festival, April 18-29.

Jun Markl is known for his refined and idiomatic explorations of the French impressionists. In this concert, he marks the centenary of the death of one of France's most famous composers, Claude Debussy, with a performance of his famous evocation of the sea in all its moods, La Mer. Markl will also lead the HK Phil in the Hong Kong premiere of Circulating Ocean, a richly colourful score by Japanese contemporary composer Toshio Hosokawa. The programme also includes Mendelssohn's The Hebrides Overture which portrays the violent seas off the west coast of Scotland, and the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla's highly atmospheric piano concerto, Nights in the Gardens of Spain, performed by Argentinean pianist Ingrid Fliter. The story follows the unlikely friendship between Ruby, a sick seven-year-old confined to her hospital bed and Dot, a socially awkward clown doctor. The pair embark on a series of imaginative adventures that transform Ruby's hospital room into a playful wonderland.
From the band's formation by the late Damon Edge in 1975, joined by longtime vocalist/guitarist Helios Creed in '77, Chrome has developed a unique methodology within the band, bringing art into sound, splicing in a Sci-Fi collage of sound bites, combining searing rock with noise, weirdness, pile driver rhythms (including scrap metal percussion), heavy rhythm-guitar riffs, effects-laden vocals, psychedelic guitar leads, and mindbending audio manipulations. Known for their experimental, de/re-construction of rock and roll, the seminal post-punk psychedelic outfit will embark on a major US tour this Spring to support their 21st studio album 'Techromancy', which was released last year on Cleopatra Records. With driving rhythms and metallic riffs of their more rocking early '80s 'Red Exposure' period, the new album, which Creed describes as 'a natural progression of the original Chrome idea', is the follow up to their 2014 double studio album 'Feel It Like a Scientist'.

So it was with last Thursday's Firstworks production of AMERICAN RHAPSODY: THE GERSHWIN SONGBOOK with Michael Andrew, Michelle Amato and seventeen piece Gershwin Big Band before a nearly full-house at Veterans Auditorium in Providence. The music was fabulous and I have been thinking about it and the Gershwins ever since.
