by A.A. Cristi
- Oct 2, 2018
The blistering comic drama Skeleton Crew begins performances on October 10 at TheatreSquared, bringing to Northwest Arkansas a new work by one of America's most acclaimed contemporary playwrights. Dominique Morisseau, a Steinberg Playwright Award-winner and two-time NAACP Image Award honoree, is "one of the rising talents in American drama" (NYTimes) and "a rising star" (L.A. Times), described by critics as a modern-day successor to 20th-century giants Arthur Miller, Clifford Odets, and August Wilson. Skeleton Crew is set in Detroit's last exporting auto plant, where sparks fly on the production line-and in the breakroom. As rumors surface about a closing date, new power dynamics emerge. When the line between blue collar and white collar blurs, how far over are they willing to step? Performances are scheduled October 10-November 4, and tickets are on sale now from $17-$48 at (479) 443-5600 or theatre2.org.
BWW Review: Artistry's Beautifully Tragic AWAKE AND SING! will Break Your Heart in the Best Way
by Jill Schafer
- Sep 21, 2018
I love sad plays. I love stories of miserable families who love each other but don't know how to express it in healthy ways. AWAKE AND SING!, now playing at Artistry's black box theater, is one such tragically beautiful and beautifully tragic play, like Tennessee Williams set in the Bronx. Or rather, since Clifford Odets' 1935 play predates Williams' major works, I guess I should say that Tennessee Williams is like Odets set in the South. The multi-generational Berger family has become beaten down by life, with the younger generation trying to break free and make a new life in this new country, if only it will let them. With a strong cast and detailed design in an intimate space, Artistry's production is beautiful and heart-breaking.

by Michael Dale
- Aug 27, 2018
Perhaps if Clifford Odets' landmark pro-union drama, WAITING FOR LEFTY, hadn't opened the year before, Lillian Hellman's 1936 labor drama, DAYS TO COME, the sophomore Broadway effort of the playwright who made a huge name for herself two years earlier with THE CHILDREN'S HOUR, might have been better received.

by Stephi Wild
- Jun 5, 2018
Her Story Theater, a company dedicated to raising awareness of the epidemic of sexual exploitation, has announced the world premiere of MONGERS - the fourth play in its cycle of dramas exposing sex trafficking practices in Chicago. Written by Her Story Theater Founder and Producing Artistic Director Mary Bonnett, and directed by John Mossman, Co-Founder of The Artistic Home, MONGERS follows a Chicago criminal defense attorney with a secret sex life who deals with his sensitive 16-year-old son's legal crisis on the day he takes a deposition from the mother of a murdered teenage sex trafficked victim. Bonnett's play uncovers the nationwide, anonymous brotherhood of men who use the Internet to find and compare notes on the women and underage girls they pay for sex. It also explores the toxicity of many of the prevailing notions of masculinity and how they contribute to an environment that allows these abuses to exist. Though the characters are composites of people Bonnett interviewed and the plot details are inspired by real-life events in Chicago.
