Spotlighters' THE WOMEN Opens Feb 24

The plot centers on a 1939 group of gossipy high-society women who spend their days at the beauty salon and haunting fashion shows. The sweet, happily wedded Mary Haines finds her marriage in trouble when shop-girl Crystal Allen gets her hooks into Mary's man. Naturally, this situation becomes the hot talk among Mary's catty friends, especially the scandalmonger Sylvia Fowler, who has little room to talk.  But with a bit of guts and daring, Mary snatches her man right back from Crystal's clutches. Snappy, witty dialogue, helps send the humor over the top.

BWW Review: Epic Theatre Rules the Yard with THESE RUTHLESS BITCHES

Epic Theatre kicks off their page to stage season with a delightfully catty update to Clare Boothe Luce classic The Women retitled THESE RUTHLESS BITCHES.  All of the original themes are still present: loyalty to men, the notion of the Ideal Woman, but everything is slightly sideways in that this re-telling takes place in a Women's Prison.  Comparisons to Orange is the New Black are obvious and easy to make, but telling the story of upper class women in a prison rather than a parlor works surprisingly well.  Instead of being captive by the rules of society, which may not ring as true for the audience today, these women are literally captive by the legal system and have merely transferred their social hierarchies and rules to a more drab environment.

Epic Theatre Opens 2015-16 Season Next Month

Epic Theatre Company begins its 2015 - 2016 "Back to Basics" Season with a world premiere satire-These Ruthless Bitches, inspired by The Women by Clare Boothe Luce.  These Ruthless Bitches takes the story of high-class society ladies backstabbing and betraying each other over brunch and sets it in a women's prison where the claws are sharper and the battles are bloodier, but all with class and sophistication, of course.
