On Monday, May 18th at 7 p.m., performing arts high schools from four boroughs will present samples of their best work of the year at Circle in the Square Theatre. Book of Mormon cast member and Circle in the Square Theatre School alumnus Christian Dante White will welcome the performers and inspire them to keep their dream alive. This annual event is the centerpiece of Circle in the Square Theatre School's Teens on Broadway program.
Today in 2008, Glory Days opened at the Circle in the Square Theatre, where it ran for one performance. Glory Days is a musical with music and lyrics by Nick Blaemire and a book by James Gardiner about four high school friends reuniting a year after graduation. The musical premiered at the Signature Theatre, a professional regional theatre in Arlington, Virginia, from January 15 through February 17, 2008, where it was directed by Eric D. Schaeffer, the Artistic Director of the theatre, with musical staging by assistant director Matthew Gardiner. The producers cited 'low advance sales' in announcing the show's closing.
On Wednesday, May 6th select eighth grade students at the Professional Performing Arts School (PPAS) will take part in a special song interpretation masterclass. Broadway actors Jason Gotay and Stephanie Gibson will be leading the masterclass. Six students were picked by PPAS voice teacher Brad Siebeking to work one on one with Ms. Gibson and Mr. Gotay.
The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey's 53rd Season opens with The Royal Family, the Tony Award-winning American classic by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber. Today in 2005, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee opened at the Circle in the Square Theatre, where it ran for 1136 performances. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a one act musical comedy conceived by Rebecca Feldman with music and lyrics by William Finn, a book by Rachel Sheinkin and additional material by Jay Reiss. The show centers on a fictional spelling bee set in a geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School. Six quirky adolescents compete in the Bee, run by three equally-quirky grown-ups. The 2005 Broadway production, directed by James Lapine, was nominated for six Tony Awards, winning two, including Best Book. The show has spawned various other productions in the U.S., including a national tour with performances in Canada, and Australian productions.
This spring, Stoneham Theatre closes its 15th Mainstage season with the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical comedy How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Performances run from May 14 - June 7, 2015.
