Japan Society, New York's premier home for Japanese performers, cutting-edge pop and avant-garde experimentation, has announced the first two music programs of the 2011-2012 season.

Japan Society's Fall 2011/Spring 2012 Performing Arts Season kicks off in September with the Shizuoka Performing Arts Center (SPAC) production of Medea and continues with two not-to-be-missed music events: J-Music Ride featuring Cibo Matto & Yu Sakai (October), and Turntable Duo: Otomo Yoshihide + Christian Marclay (November) which is part of Performa 11.

Known as "Brooklyn's leading avant-garde venue," (Wall Street Journal) ISSUE Project Room presents a spectacular music- and star-filled evening on Friday, March 4th, honoring the 60th birthday of the prolific composer, guitar virtuoso, and multi-instrumentalist Elliott Sharp.

Looking at Music 3.0, the third in a series of exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art exploring the influence of music on contemporary art practices, focuses on New York in the 1980s and 1990s and the birth of 'remix culture.' The exhibition is on view in The Yoshiko and Akio Morita Media Gallery from February 16 through June 6, 2011. Highlighting a unique range of activity within the city during those decades, the exhibition addresses the birth of hip hop; new articulations of feminism as seen in video chain letters, zines, and raucous art and music performances; the continued artistic development of music videos; and the rise of the digital domain, where sound and image acquired a curious parity as sampled bits of electronic information, raising the curtain on new creative possibilities.
