Les Liaisons Dangereuses was adapted by Christopher Hampton in 1985 from an epistolary novel of the same title by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, 1782. Although an army general and never before a writer, it has been said de Laclos intended to (in his own words), 'write a work which departed from the ordinary, which made a noise, and which would remain on earth after [his] death'. It is universally agreed he achieved his ambitions with his masterpiece, Liaisons.

This week on THEATER TALK, it's two inspired British theatrical artists on Broadway - first, Simon McBurney, the creator and performer in the acclaimed theatrical experience, The Encounter, followed by Christopher Hampton, dramatist of the 1782 book by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, Les Liaisons Dangereuses.

One of my favorite things in seeing all the shows I do is to stumble upon one that I like to refer to as 'alchemy'. It's that rare instance where all of the elements, the script, actors, director, set, costume, lights, music, etc all come together in just the right way and at just the right times to form pure gold. It may look like science or technical expertise but it's really just magic. One of those shows is ACT's current production of Christopher Hampton's 'Dangerous Liaisons'. Ms. Sorensen previously appeared on the Donmar stage in Ms. Rourke's 2014 production of Coriolanus opposite Tom Hiddleston.
