After collaborations in 2012 and 2013 with an all-male cast, Tina Croll and Jamie Cunningham's The Men Dancers: From the Horse's Mouth make their return to New York today, May 30 through June 1 in honor of ballet great Frederic Franklin (1914-2013) in what would have been his centenary year. This celebration will take place at the Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts (3 Spruce Street, between Park Row and Gold Street) and is presented by Pace University.
On Friday, May 16th, I was privileged to be in attendance of the opening night of Ballet Academy East's 2014 Spring Performance. These young dancers displayed good training and a delight to be performing in eight varied works. Having seen a number of school performances this year, the school shows itself to be a cut above.

The night was a treasure trove of ballets by the great English choreographer Antony Tudor: three of his masterpieces from the 1930s, originally staged in London and an unearthed gem from 1952.

Ballet Academy East presents the 2014 Spring Performance from May 16-18, 2014 at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater, 524 West 59th Street, NYC. Performances: Friday, May 16 at 7pm; Saturday, May 17 at 2pm and 7pm; and Sunday, May 18 at 2pm. The Saturday matinee will include crafts and photo opportunities with the dancers at intermission. Tickets are $60 for Center Orchestra and $40 for Side Orchestra and Balcony. Tickets will go on sale on April 1, 2014. The winners of the 4th Annual Clive Barnes Award were announced Monday, January 6 at The Walter Reade Theatre, Lincoln Centre. This year's Theatre Award, presented by Susan Stroman was given to Jonny Orsini for his performance in The Nance. This year's Dance Award, presented by Wendy Whelan, was given to Lloyd Mayor of Martha Graham Dance Company.

MDT welcomes Charles Askegard home to the Twin Cities in the position of Associate Artistic Director. Recently retired from a celebrated career with New York City Ballet, Mr. Askegard will bring the breadth of his experience to the organization where he began his dance training.
