'MAME', starring Angela Lansbury opened on Broadway 50 years ago! Last evening Thursday, May 26th, members of that company gathered for a 50th Anniversary Celebration at Sardi's.
On a bright autumn night in Manchester, a woman named Harper Regan walks away from her job, her home, her husband and her daughter. The play named after her, 'Harper Regan' by English playwright Simon Stephens, stunningly reveals life on the cusp of the working class in modern British society. The author is the 2015 TONY Award-winner for best play ('The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time'). This 2008 play is a dramatic Odyssey navigating family, love and redemption. T. Schreiber Theatre, 151 West 26th Street, will present the piece May 4 to June 4, directed by Terry Schreiber.
Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella is a musical in two acts with music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and a book by Douglas Carter Beane based partly on Hammerstein's 1957 book. The story is based upon the fairy tale Cinderella, particularly the French version Cendrillon, ou la Petite Pantoufle de Verre, by Charles Perrault. The story concerns a young woman forced into a life of servitude by her cruel stepmother, who dreams of a better life. With the help of her Fairy Godmother, Cinderella is transformed into an elegant young lady and is able to attend the ball to meet her Prince, but, in this version, she must open the Prince's eyes to the injustice in his kingdom. Rodgers and Hammerstein originally wrote the songs for a 1957 television broadcast starring Julie Andrews, and it was remade twice for television and adapted for the stage in various versions prior to the Broadway production. The 2013 adaptation was the first version of Cinderella with the Rodgers and Hammerstein score mounted on Broadway. The new book by Beane introduces several new characters and a sympathetic stepsister, and the score features several new Rodgers and Hammerstein songs.

On Friday March 11 Kirk Frederick's new book Write That Down! The Comedy of Male Actress Charles Pierce was launched at ONE the Gay and Lesbian Archives at the USC Libraries on North Adams in downtown Los Angeles. The sellout event was a benefit for ONE Archives. There were scrumptious hors d'oeuvres, followed by a presentation, which included a video slide montage, a 5 minute film clip from Pierce's appearance, in the early 80s, on The Dick Cavett Show, and then an interview with Kirk Frederick by moderator/ USC professor of English Chris Freeman.
