BWW Review: Madcap Frolic BASTARD JONES Riffs On Henry Fielding's Bawdy Classic

While it's not unexpected to have the title character of a musical based on Henry Fielding's infamously bawdy 1749 novel "The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling" be introduced to the audience while enjoying the afterglow of a lusty time with an agreeable lass, what's a bit surprising at first about BASTARD JONES is that while singing of juicy peaches, pulsing blood, bees, flowers and whatnot, their post-coital intimacy includes her helping to strap on his wooden leg.

BroadwayWorld had an enlightening conversation with Loomis about Guthrie's impact on American music as well as around the world; performing the show in different cities; and cherishing the art of storytelling in this fast-paced technological age.

BWW Review: Horton Foote's THE TRAVELING LADY Arrives At The Cherry Lane

As America's great playwrights go, Horton Foote, who passed on in 2009, just shy of his 93rd birthday, was perhaps the most understated of them all.  In a prolific career that involved golden age television dramas, Academy Award winning screenplays and dozens of stage works, his favorite source of inspiration was the relatives and neighbors he observed growing up in the quiet comfort of East Texas.

BWW Interview: Director Joe O'Byrne Returns to Irish Rep this Summer with THE ARAN ISLANDS

As part of their 2017 summer season, Irish Repertory Theatre, is presenting the US premiere of THE ARAN ISLANDS, directed by Joe O' Byrne. Returning to Irish Rep after 16 years, O'Byrne is looking forward to sharing Irish playwright, John Millington Synge's work with New York audiences and is grateful to this organization for making it possible to share the work of Irish artists. This classic work celebrates the art of storytelling and challenges audiences to step outside their own cultures for a brief time and immerse themselves in a whole new world of discovery and enlightenment. BroadwayWorld had the incredible opportunity to speak with O'Byrne about his return to Irish Rep; the work of John Millington Synge; and how the themes and lessons are still applicable today.

BWW Review: BASTARD JONES Rocks the House at the Cell Theatre

"It's not unusual to be loved by anyone…" Admittedly, this is the wrong Tom Jones and yes, I may have stolen this little pun from the show's opening narrative, but that Mr. Jones was on the perfect track to describing what chaos ensues in the life of a man whom everyone adores: the literary Tom Jones. A man who cannot limit his constant self-indulgence but is yet still seen as a good man despite his ill reputed sexual conquests. As a disgrace to both his family and a disappointment to those who truly feel for him, his reputation is one that follows him as a sort of fate; and to reverse fate, some pretty drastic things have to happen. Turn all of this into a musical and what we now have is Bastard Jones, an incredibly clever, zany and sexy raucous of a show that is as funny as it is profound. Now in performances at the Cell, this is just the sort of guilty fun that everyone is looking for and, for a little over two hours, will bring such joy to your heart and a "tingle" to everywhere else - prepare yourselves indeed.

BWW Review: RENT Keeps Finding Ways to Get to Your Heart

Jonathan Larson's RENT 20th Anniversary Tour made its way back to the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis this week. This Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical could have come across as dated or unimportant with 20 years (actually 21) behind it, but lucky for me and the full houses who purchased tickets to the Minneapolis run, that was not the case.
