Grammy-nominated harpist Yolanda Kondonassis announces the premiere performance series of Grammy and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Jennifer Higdon's Concerto for Harp and Orchestra, written for and to be premiered by Kondonassis with The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Ward Stare in May 2018. The premiere series of performances will continue with Yolanda Kondonassis as soloist throughout 2018 and 2019 with consortium members the Harrisburg Symphony, Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Lansing Symphony, Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra, and Baton Rouge Symphony. The consortium was designed to bring the work to both large and small communities in a variety of geographic regions. (more...)

Concertgoers can see, hear and take photos with “Big Carl,” Carl Fischer Music's historic giant tuba, at a free NJSO Accent event following the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra's performance of Vaughan Williams' Tuba Concerto with NJSO Principal Tuba Derek Fenstermacher on Sunday, April 9, at 3 pm at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. Tuba players who bring their own mouthpieces can enter a drawing for a chance to play the nearly 8-foot-tall, 100-pound instrument. College students can also see Big Carl at the College Night party after the 8 pm concert on Friday, April 7. (more...)

Millersville University instructor and internationally accomplished percussionist James Armstrong will perform Caribbean and West African influenced repertoire at the Winter Center on Sunday October 11, 7:30 PM. He will be joined by regional artists Danny Stuber (piano), Mike Vitale (bass) and John Peifer (drums) in this presentation of latin and jazz standards and arrangements. Extensive fieldwork and collaboration with local musician masters in West Africa, Puerto Rico, Brazil, and the United States have rendered Armstrong a specialist in Haitian, Cuban, and West African based folkloric drumming.  The Winter Center is located at 60 W. Washington National Opera Announces Full Schedule for American Opera Initiative

WASHINGTON)—Washington National Opera (WNO) today announced details for the fourth season of the American Opera Initiative, its comprehensive commissioning program that brings contemporary American stories to the stage while fostering the talents of rising American composers and librettists. Three pairings of new opera composers and librettists—Christopher Weiss and John de los Santos, David Clay Mettens and Joshua McGuire, and Sarah Hutchings and Mark Sonnenblick—will premiere new one-act operas, each based on a contemporary American story, in a semi-staged concert performance on December 2, 2015 in the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater. Composer Luna Pearl Woolf and librettist Caitlin Vincent, an alumnus of the program's second season, will present their new hour-long work Better Gods—based on the life of Queen Lili'uokalani, the last monarch of Hawaii—on January 8 and 9, 2016 in the Terrace Theater. Vocalist Joey Arias is not what he appears to the uninitiated. This is not a drag performer executing pastiche, but rather an artist serious about music with the talent to offer a full-blooded show. Lifelong affinity for Billie Holiday first professionally surfaced in 1987's Recording Arias on Holiday and continued with the Off-Broadway run of Strange Fruit, an homage to the icon. Her concert Wednesday night for Lincoln Center's American Songbook series, with evocative musical arrangement by Matt Ray, brings Arias' devotion "all the way from downtown above 14th Street." Carol Wincenc, the Grammy-nominated artist who is one of the most acclaimed and respected flutists performing today, marks her 25th anniversary as a member of the faculty of The Juilliard School in the 2013-14 season. She is celebrating the milestone with a concert at Juilliard that represents her most cherished facets of artistic life: new music, with the world premiere of a work written for her, and the U.S. and New York premieres of works by Alfred Schnittke and Hans Werner Henze; collaboration with her esteemed colleagues, with every work on the program requiring at least two guest artists; and, of course, teaching some of the best young flutists in the world who pass through Juilliard, with seven of her Juilliard students joining her on the program.
