That takes guts--and it's what the nine finalists in the Met's National Council Auditions Grand Final Concert did on Sunday, April 29. At stake? A grand push forward for the careers in opera that they've dreamed about. (There was also some money involved: $15,000 apiece for the winners, $5,000 each for the runs up.)

The final production of the Met's 2017-18 season, Gounod's Roméo et Juliette opens on April 23, 2018, with Bryan Hymel and Ailyn Pérez as the star-crossed lovers, conducted by Plácido Domingo and directed by Bartlett Sher. The cast also includes Karine Deshayes as Stéphano, Joshua Hopkins as Mercutio, and Kwangchul Youn as Frère Laurent, with six performances through May 12, 2018.

Verdi's grand opera Les Vepres siciliennes will be conducted by Omer Meir Wellber, who, following Mefistofele (2015) and Andrea Chenier (2017), will now command his third Staatsoper premiere. Antu Romero Nunes, who audiences will already know from his interpretation of Rossini's Guillaume Tell (2014, Munich Opera Festival), returns to Munich for this premiere.

The Metropolitan Opera's 2017-18 season will feature 220 performances of 26 works, including two Met premieres, one co-commissioned by the company and one an older masterpiece having its first Met performances; a variety of repertory favorites, three in new productions; and performances of Verdi's towering concert work for soloists, orchestra, and chorus, the Requiem. Of note, Broadway star Kelli O'Hara is set to return to the Met in Così fan tutte this season.

Fabio Luisi This winter and spring, Grammy and ECHO Klassik Award-winning conductor Fabio Luisi looks forward to several high-profile guest conducting appearances, including return engagements with the Philadelphia Orchestra - to help celebrate 'Andre Watts's 60-Year Legacy' - and the San Francisco Symphony, as well as a return to conduct two different programs with the London Symphony. He also tours California with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra (DNSO), of which he is the newly appointed Principal Conductor, with concerts featuring beloved soprano Deborah Voigt; and tours Europe with Philharmonia Zurich and special guest Anne-Sophie Mutter. Rounding out the conductor's busy season are concerts with Japan's NHK Symphony in Tokyo; returns to Filarmonica della Scala and the Munich Philharmonic; and a concert at Florence's Opera di Firenze, where Luisi assumes the post of Music Director starting in the spring of 2018.
