The Oakland East Bay Symphony Closes Its 25th Season with BERLIOZ REQUIEM, 5/16

Every inch of the historic Paramount Theatre stage in Oakland will be packed with the complete, 25-year-old Oakland East Bay Symphony, the 55-year-old Oakland Symphony Chorus, 50-year-old Oakland Youth Orchestra, Music Director and conductor Michael Morgan and guest tenor Thomas Glenn, who will collectively pull out all the stops in one performance only of Berlioz' monumental RequiemFriday, May 16, at 8 pm. “I can't think of a better way to bring together all these organizations on one stage to mark our significant anniversaries as part of the Bay Area music scene,” says Morgan. The performance will be preceded by a pre-concert talk by John Kendall Bailey at 7 pm and the evening is sponsored by Bell Investment Advisors. Elkhanah Pulitzer to Direct LA Opera's LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR, 3/15-4/6

A darkly romantic tale of family honor, betrayal and madness, Gaetano Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor returns to LA Opera for the first time in a decade, conducted by Music Director James Conlon and directed by Elkhanah Pulitzer in her LA Opera debut.

LA Opera Presents LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR, 3/15-4/6

(Los Angeles) December 19, 2013 - General Director Placido Domingo announced updated details for LA Opera's first production of Lucia di Lammermoor since 2003. Conducted by Music Director James Conlon and directed by Elkhana Pulitzer in her LA Opera debut, the new production stars Albina Shagimuratova in the title role as the dagger-wielding Scottish lass and Saimir Pirgu as her secret lover, Edgardo. Lucia di Lammermoor will open today, March 15, 2014, and run for a total of six performances through April 6 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

Diana Damrau Sings the Title Role in Bellini's LA SONNAMBULA at the Met, Beg. Tonight

Diana Damrau will add a new role to her extensive repertory when she sings her first-ever performances of Amina, the title character in Bellini's bel canto showpiece La Sonnambula. Last season, Damrau made an acclaimed role debut as Violetta in Verdi's La Traviata in a sold-out series of performances at the Met. La Sonnambula, which opens tonight, March 14 in a revival of Mary Zimmerman's 2009 production, will be conducted by Marco Armiliato and also star rising Mexican tenor Javier Camarena as Elvino and Italian bass Michele Pertusi as Rodolfo.

Natalie Dessay Makes New York Debut at Carnegie Hall Tonight

French soprano Natalie Dessay makes her highly anticipated New York recital debut tonight, March 12 at 8:00 p.m. at Carnegie Hall in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage, joined by pianist and frequent collaborator Philippe Cassard. Ms. Dessay and Mr. Cassard recently released an acclaimed recording of Debussy's works in 2012 (Virgin Classics), two of which are featured in this program-'Apparition,' and 'La romance d'Ariel.' The program also features German works by Brahms, Clara Schumann, and Richard Strauss, and French works by Duparc, Poulenc, and Fauré.

The Canadian Opera Company Presents ROBERTO DEVEREUX with Sondra Radvanovsky, 4/25-5/21

World renowned American soprano Sondra Radvanovsky returns to the Canadian Opera Company this spring in the ultimate diva role, Queen Elizabeth I, for the COC premiere of Donizetti's Roberto Devereux. The tumultuous final days of the reign of the Virgin Queen are depicted in this powerful drama of show-stopping vocal fireworks, directed by Stephen Lawless and conducted by Corrado Rovaris. Roberto Devereux is sung in Italian with English SURTITLES and runs for seven performances at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts on April 25, 29, May 3, 10, 15, 18, 21, 2014.

Opera in the Heights to Present LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR, Begin. 3/28

Opera in the Heights presents Gaetano Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, the final production of the 2013-2014 season, beginning Mar. 28 at Lambert Hall. This dramma tragico (tragic opera) in three acts was created by Donizetti in 1835. Salvatore Cammarano wrote the Italian language libretto loosely based on Sir Walter Scott's historical novel The Bride of Lammermoor.

Ensemble of the Romantic Century Presents TCHAIKOVSKY: NONE BUT THE LONELY HEART, Now thru 3/9

Celebrating its 13th season, the Ensemble of the Romantic Century (ERC) presents Tchaikovsky: None But the Lonely Heart at The Fishman Space in the new BAM Fisher. A fully staged theatrical concert blending striking music, powerful language and biography, Tchaikovsky: None But the Lonely Heart delves into the unconventional 16-year long relationship between one of the great composers of the 19th century and his patroness, Madame von Meck. Written by Eve Wolf and directed by Donald T. Sanders, this evening-length production seamlessly interweaves a dramatic script performed by actor Simon Fortin (Tchaikovsky) and actress Ariel Bock (Madame von Meck) of Shakespeare & Company with live chamber and vocal music performed by violinist Rachel Lee Priday, cellist Adrian Daurov, pianist Eve Wolf and tenor Blake Friedman. Featuring some of Tchaikovsky's epic pieces including Piano Trio in A Minor, Tchaikovsky: None But the Lonely Heart represents some of the composer's balletic works through dance both choreographed and performed by American Ballet Theatre dancer Daniel Mantei.

Washington National Opera Announces 2014-2015 Season - FLORENCIA IN THE AMAZON, LA BOHEME and More

Washington National Opera (WNO), led by Artistic Director Francesca Zambello, today announced its 2014-2015 season. It includes the company premiere of Daniel Catán's Spanish-language Florencia in the Amazon, a brand-new production of Puccini's classic La bohème, the company premiere of Rachel Portman's family opera The Little Prince, an English-language production of Poulenc's 20th-century drama Dialogues of the Carmelites, a revival of Wagner's epic The Flying Dutchman, and an acclaimed new-to- Washington staging of Rossini's Cinderella. A third season of the American Opera Initiative, including the world premiere of Penny by two alumni of the program, continues WNO's efforts to commission new works and expand the American repertory. Highlights from the 2014-2015 season will be performed by the WNO Orchestra and special guests at a free preview concert on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at 6 p.m. in the Kennedy Center Opera House.

THE MERRY WIDOW, LES CONTES D'HOFFMANN and More Set for The Met's 2014-15 Live in HD Season

The Met: Live in HD, the Metropolitan Opera's award-winning series of live transmissions to more than 2,000 movie theaters in 65 countries around the world, will feature ten operas in the 2014-15 season, including all six new productions in the Met season. All ten performances, transmitted live from the Met stage, will feature the world's finest singers, conductors, and theatrical artists.

THE DEATH OF KLINGHOFFER, LA DONNA DEL LAGO, THE MERRY WIDOW and More Set for The Metropolitan Opera's 2014-15 Season

The Metropolitan Opera's 2014-15 season will feature 26 operas, three of them company premieres, in six new productions and 18 revivals showcasing the talents of the world's leading singers, conductors, and theater artists. The three operas that will have their first-ever Met performances, each staged by a director making his Met debut, are John Adams's The Death of Klinghoffer, conducted by David Robertson and directed by Tom Morris, opening October 20; Rossini's La Donna del Lago, conducted by Michele Mariotti and directed by Paul Curran, opening February 16, 2015; and Tchaikovsky's one-act opera Iolanta, conducted by Valery Gergiev and directed by Mariusz Treli?ski. Iolanta will be presented in a double bill with a new staging of Bartok's one-act Duke Bluebeard's Castle, also conducted by Gergiev and directed by Treli?ski.

Soprano Angela Meade to Make European House and Role Debuts in Frankfurt Opera's EDGAR and Torino's WILLIAM TELL, 2/16-18 & 5/7-18

This month, the first of two major house and role debuts takes Angela Meade – whose numerous honors include Richard Tucker and Beverly Sills Artist Awards – to Europe. For her first appearances at the Frankfurt Opera, the soprano sings her first Fidelia in concert performances of Puccini's Edgar (Feb 16 & 18), before making her Italian debut with her first Mathilde in a new Graham Vick production of Rossini's William Tell at the Teatro Regio di Torino (May 7-18) that will tour to Carnegie Hall next season. These European debuts follow on the heels of Meade's success in New York, where she recently headlined Bellini's Norma and showed off her comic chops in Verdi's Falstaff, both at the Metropolitan Opera, and the latter seen worldwide in the Met's Live in HD series. She also performed at a special Richard Tucker Centennial Gala, broadcast Live from Lincoln Center on PBS-TV.
