The roar of the audience's appreciation at the curtain call still rings loudly in my ear. Although I alternated between laughing and crying while watching the national tour of COME FROM AWAY at the Adrienne Arsht Center, what I remember feeling once the curtain came down was joy. I may have discovered for myself why this show is such a hit on Broadway and on tour because while it talks about a challenging time in our history, it also reminds us of how kind people were in the aftermath of 911. (Something that feels lacking in our current political climate.) It is easy to be kind to those you love, but the unquestionable kindness people can have for strangers - inspires. COME FROM AWAY is a story we need to keep telling. It's a story we should continue to tell to remind us that people can and should genuinely care for one another even and especially when they have nothing to gain. 

'On the northeast tip of North America, on an island called Newfoundland, there's an airport. It used to be one of the biggest airports in the world. And next to it is a town, called Gander.' These first lines of dialogue set the tone for a musical about community and acceptance in the face of adversity. That musical, Come From Away, just opened in Miami at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts as a leg of its first North American tour.

That the odds are against it underscores just what a tremendous achievement COME FROM AWAY represents. Almost two decades later, this still isn't easy ground to tread - not for creators and certainly not for audiences. But COME FROM AWAY rings true. It is reverent but not funereal, stirring but not saccharine. It works, perhaps, because it looks at 9/11 from a distance - not from the streets of Manhattan but the distant shores of Canada instead. And it purposely eschews the maudlin. There is no emotional browbeating in this show... It speaks to a part of us that we sometimes forget we have - the part that, we hope, will rise to the occasion and respond to tragedy with compassion and care...

Broadway In Chicago is delighted to announce that individual tickets for the national tour of COME FROM AWAY, a new musical about the true story of the small town that welcomed the world, will go on sale to the public on Friday, May 31. COME FROM AWAY will make its Chicago debut at Broadway In Chicago's Cadillac Palace Theatre (151 W. Randolph) for a limited engagement July 30 through August 18, 2019.

Making its St. Louis debut at the Fabulous Fox Theatre right now, a commanding drum beat kicks off a high-energy opening number to welcome the audience of Tony award-winning Come From Away: A New Musical. On its first North American tour with a book, music, and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, you'll land on 'the rock' where, for the next 100 entertaining minutes, you'll be treated to a heaping helping of musical hospitality from the residents of Gander, Newfoundland. Most of the people who read this article will know what Iowa Nice is if they heard it, but I would wager that most of those same people who not know what Gander Nice is. This is going to change soon as 'Come From Away,' by Irene Sankoff and David Hein, is coming to Des Moines as part of Des Moines Performing Arts 2019-2020 Willis Broadway Series. I have been following this show for a few years, watching it become the hit that it is, and couldn't wait to see it when it comes to Des Moines January 28-February 2, 2020. So this last weekend, I traveled to Omaha to see 'Come From Away.' And I was not disappointed.

On September 11, 2001, approximately 7,000 airline passengers were stranded in the sleepy Maritime town of Gander, Newfoundland. In a tremendous display of warmth and compassion, the townspeople opened their homes to the frightened newcomers, welcoming them like cherished friends. Their story is beautifully told in Come From Away, a beloved Broadway musical.
