Arts Midwest has announced that Tennessee Shakespeare Company is one of just 40 theatre companies in the United States to receive its prestigious Shakespeare in American Communities grant for TSC's innovative Romeo and Juliet Project. This is the second consecutive year TSC has been awarded the grant as the youngest organization of the 40 theatres selected.
ArtPlace America (ArtPlace) Executive Director Jamie L. Bennett announced $14.7 million in 55 grants to creative placemaking projects that will work in 79 communities of all sizes across 31 states. In these projects, the arts will play an explicit and intentional role in helping to shape communities' social, physical, and economic futures.
The critically acclaimed HARLEM SUMMER SHAKRESPEARE will present its 10th season of FREE SHAKESPEARE in Riverbank State Park with ROMEO AND JULIET beginning July 23rd and continuing through August 17th, 2014, with the official opening on July 24th at 8 pm. The company will again perform in the Riverside Amphitheatre in Riverbank State Park, Riverside Drive at 145th Street, overlooking the Hudson River. Performances are Wednesdays through Sundays at 8 PM.
Barter has a rich tradition of producing new plays, many of which have originated in this festival, known as the AFPP. This year, the festival includes readings of seven brand new Appalachian plays July 7 - 14, 2014 as well as a "mini-production" of a world-premiere musical, "Winter Wheat," July 29- August 10.

South African soprano Hlengiwe Mkhwanazi will make her Lyric Opera and role debut as Clara in Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, the company's general director Anthony Freud announced today. She replaces American soprano Angel Blue, who has withdrawn from the production for personal reasons.
UCSB's LAUNCH PAD program was featured in the March 2013 issue of American Theatre magazine as an innovative model of new play development in the US. While professional theatres are not always able to take a risk on producing new work, the university offers a playwright the chance to see the play produced in a safe environment with students who are deeply engaged and hungry to learn how this process works. Since its inception in 2005, the department has developed and produced 9 plays with the playwright in residence.
