Carnegie Hall's The '60s: The Years that Changed America, a citywide festival from January 14-March 24, 2018, concludes this month with a vast array of events presented at Carnegie Hall and at more than 35 leading partner cultural institutions throughout New York City. Dr. Barbara Ann Teer's National Black Theatre [NBT] announces today the cast of the final workshop production for the 49th Season to conclude the I Am Soul Playwriting Residency for playwright Derek Lee McPhatter. McPhatter's workshop production will be Serious Adverse Effects which will be directed by Mary E. Hodges.

'Heard the one about the black guy born on a slave ship in the early 18th century? He ended his days running a grocery store in Westminster. That was after a career as a famous musician, composer, author and actor. And in 1774 he became the first black Briton to vote. Never heard of him? Neither had I, until I discovered Thomas Gainsborough's portrait of the extraordinary Charles Ignatius Sancho, in 2007, in a book by historian Gretchen Gerzina called Black England.

In March 2018, National Black Theatre, in partnership with the Harlem Stage and Carnegie Hall will present 'Mothers of the Movements,' [MOMS] a celebration of the contribution of Black women pioneers from the Civil Rights and Black Arts movements. 'Mothers of the Movements' is a two-part series that will take place in both Harlem-based institutions.

Liza Jessie Peterson's THE PECULIAR PATRIOT Opens at National Black Theatre

Liza Jessie Peterson's hilarious and poignant one woman, multimedia show The Peculiar Patriot opened to standing ovation Sunday at Dr. Barbara Ann Teer's National Black Theatre (NBT), kicking off the historical Harlem theater's 49th season, Black to the Future. NBT and Hi-ARTS have joined forces to present the play, a blistering critique of the American criminal justice system. Peterson, who worked for nearly two decades at Rikers Island in various capacities and was featured in Ava DuVernay's Oscar-nominated documentary 13th, wrote the show, which is directed by Talvin Wilks. The Peculiar Patriot runs through October 1.

Dr. Barbara Ann Teer's National Black Theatre's 49th season cedes the floor to modern-day griots with gripping, one-person tales capturing the trauma and triumph of a people. In a nod to the African tradition of the storyteller and historian who inspires and uplifts, the season is anchored by two one-person shows, The Peculiar Patriot, by Liza Jessie Peterson, a coproduction with Hi-ARTS, and Sancho by Paterson Joseph, a coproduction with Classical Theatre of Harlem (CTH) and Pemberley Productions. Themed "Black to the Future," the 49th season-which includes workshop productions by resident playwrights-seeks to take stock of the present and look to the past to predict and help shape a brighter future for Black people.
