NEW DRAMATISTS,Tony® Honor recipient and the nation's premier playwright development laboratory, will honor six-time Tony Award winning actress, Audra McDonald with their 2016 Distinguished Achievement Award at its 67th Annual Spring Luncheon tribute. The event will be held Thursday, May 12 at the New York Marriott Marquis.

Artists/educators/activists Willa J. Taylor and Bobby Biedrzycki of Goodman Theatre's Education and Engagement team have been invited to present an interactive workshop at South by Southwest Education (SXSWedu) an internationally renowned convergence of creative artists and educators, in Austin, Texas, next week.

From a field of 12 local high school students, Damaris Vizvett, Samuel Christian and Aryana Williams have been selected as the top three performers in the August Wilson Monologue Competition (AWMC) regional finals hosted at Center Theatre Group's Mark Taper Forum on Monday night, February 29, 2016. Vizvett and Christian will go on to represent Los Angeles in the national finals on May 2. This year's competition featured high school students from three Southern California counties. Today in 1995, Smokey Joe's Cafe opened at the Virginia Theatre (now the August Wilson Theatre) where it ran for 2036 performances. Smokey Joe's Cafe is a musical revue showcasing 39 pop standards, including rock and roll, rhythm and blues songs written by songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The Original Broadway cast recording, Smokey Joe's Cafe: The Songs Of Leiber And Stoller won a Grammy award in 1996. In revue format with no unifying theme the 39 songs are presented by various members of the cast in various combinations, with no dialogue. There are novelty songs ('Charlie Brown'), romantic ballads ('Spanish Harlem') and infectious melodies ('There Goes My Baby').
2016 August Wilson Monologue Competition Chicago Finals to be Held at Goodman Theatre

Twenty-one Chicago high school students will perform in the August Wilson Monologue Competition Finals on Monday, March 7, 2015 at 6:00 pm at the Goodman Theatre, 170 N. Dearborn St. for a chance to represent Chicago in the National Competition in New York City. Judges for this years' competition include Narda Alcorn, Equity Stage Manager on many August Wilson productions, playwright Lydia Diamond and actor Allen Gilmore, who has performed in numerous August Wilson plays.

The Playhouse is celebrating its 57th season as the region's preeminent professional theatre and Robison's fifth season as artistic director.

Buckland Theatre Co. launches as a full-scale producing company with a powerful new version of August Strindberg's MISS JULIE. MISS JULIE is currently running at Camden's Etcetera Theatre, taking over the space entirely for the duration of its four-week run. McCarter Theatre Center & Princeton to Host August Wilson Symposium, 4/18

On Monday, April 18th, McCarter Theatre Center and Princeton University's Lewis Center for the Arts will host a symposium commemorating the 20th anniversary of August Wilson's seminal speech, "The Ground on Which I Stand," delivered in 1996 from the stage of the McCarter's Matthew's Theatre addressing questions of race, diversity, and cultural identity in the American Theater.
