On the first program, July 2-3, 2014, titled 'Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, and Friends,' the New York Philharmonic will perform Shostakovich's Festive Overture; Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 1, with pianist Joyce Yang as soloist; Musorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain; Rachmaninoff's arrangement of his own Vocalise; and Tchaikovsky's Waltz of the Flowers from The Nutcracker, and Marche slave. The second program, July 4-6, 2014, titled 'Star-Spangled Celebration,' will feature the New York Philharmonic and United States Marine Drum & Bugle Corps - 'The Commandant's Own,' which is celebrating its 80th-anniversary year - in a program that includes Copland's Clarinet Concerto, with Associate Principal Clarinet Mark Nuccio as soloist, and Fanfare for the Common Man; Gershwin's 'Strike Up the Band' from Strike Up the Band; Sousa marches; and more. In these performances Major Brian Dix, director and commanding officer of 'The Commandant's Own,' will share conducting duties with Bramwell Tovey.
Prolific film, stage and television actor, director and composer John Rubinstein, a native Angeleno and son of legendary pianist Arthur Rubinstein, appears with Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO) Music Director and pianist Jeffrey Kahane, LACO principals and special guest pianist Christopher O'Riley to explore personal and musical legacies at Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra's (LACO) WESTSIDE CONNECTIONS chamber music series on Thursday, May 15, 2014, 7:30 pm, at the Moss Theater in Santa Monica. Rubinstein created the role of Bob Fosse's Pippin on Broadway and received a Tony Award for Children of a Lesser God, and O'Riley is a versatile pianist as well as host of the popular NPR radio program "From the Top.' They join LACO Music Director Jeffrey Kahane, Concertmaster Margaret Batjer and Principal Cello Andrew Shulman in a performance that pays homage to the remarkable legacy of both Rubinsteins and features Rachmaninoff's Sonata in G minor (Shulman and Kahane), Chopin's Nocturne in D-flat major Op. 27, No. 2 (Kahane), and Brahms' Piano Trio No. 2 in C major, Op. 87 (Batjer, Shulman and O'Riley).

The other Philharmonic concerts will be conducted by Bramwell Tovey (July 23 and 25) and Ted Sperling (July 24), and will feature works by Copland, Gershwin, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Loesser, among others.
Sweet, singing lines stem from the fingertips of Russian pianist Yulianna Avdeeva as she joins Pacific Symphony to perform the compelling melodies of Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1, led by Music Director Carl St.Clair. Winner of the First Prize at the International Frederic Chopin Competition in 2010, Avdeeva has been praised especially for her Chopin interpretations: "Her pacing is born of intelligent feeling and clarity of thought, and her ability to finesse Chopin's inner voices puts many to shame" (The Guardian). Chopin himself was a prodigy and wrote with glittering aesthetics for piano like no other composer ever would. Following this expressive piano solo, St.Clair takes the orchestra on the courageous journey created by Richard Strauss in his tone poem, "Ein Heldenleben" (A Hero's Life). The work is held dear by St.Clair and the orchestra, who performed it on the European tour in 2006 to glowing reviews, and it features Concertmaster Raymond Kobler playing the solo violin representative of Strauss' wife, Pauline.
Tonight, March 26, 2014, two longtime friends - violinist Hyeyung Julie Yoon and pianist Soyeon Kate Lee - will present an unforgettable evening of chamber music at the new downtown venue SubCulture (45 Bleecker Street, downstairs). The concert features the New York premiere of composer Robert Sirota's Pange Lingua Sonata, written for Yoon and Lee in 2012, and Bach's Sonata in C Minor. Celebrating its 13th season, the Ensemble of the Romantic Century (ERC) presents Tchaikovsky: None But the Lonely Heart at The Fishman Space in the new BAM Fisher. A fully staged theatrical concert blending striking music, powerful language and biography, Tchaikovsky: None But the Lonely Heart delves into the unconventional 16-year long relationship between one of the great composers of the 19th century and his patroness, Madame von Meck. Written by Eve Wolf and directed by Donald T. Sanders, this evening-length production seamlessly interweaves a dramatic script performed by actor Simon Fortin (Tchaikovsky) and actress Ariel Bock (Madame von Meck) of Shakespeare & Company with live chamber and vocal music performed by violinist Rachel Lee Priday, cellist Adrian Daurov, pianist Eve Wolf and tenor Blake Friedman. Featuring some of Tchaikovsky's epic pieces including Piano Trio in A Minor, Tchaikovsky: None But the Lonely Heart represents some of the composer's balletic works through dance both choreographed and performed by American Ballet Theatre dancer Daniel Mantei.
This April, Lorin Maazel conducts the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra in two concerts of works by Richard Strauss at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage. On Friday, April 11 at 8:00 p.m., the orchestra performs Also sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30, and Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche, Op. 28, and is joined by pianist Emanuel Ax for Burleske. Acclaimed as an artist who possesses 'compelling virtuosity and sensitivity' (Los Angeles Times), pianist Joyce Yang captivates audiences around the globe with a full schedule of concerto and recital performances. Just 27 years old, Yang first came to international attention in 2005, when she became the Silver Medalist of the 12th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. As the youngest contestant that year, she swept two additional awards as an all-around winner. More recently, she was awarded an Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2010, one of the most prestigious prizes in classical music. This performance marks Yang's Seattle debut.

Wuorinen, the 75-year-old composer who has both a Pulitzer Prize and a MacArthur 'genius' grant to his credit, based his opera on the short story of the same name by fellow Pulitzer-winner Annie Proulx, who also penned the libretto (her first). The heartbreaking story of a complex emotional-sexual relationship between two Wyoming cowboys over 20 years starting in 1963 earned wide renown in Ang Lee's 2005 film version, which won three Academy Awards among many other international prizes. The New York Times first-night review of the Madrid production called Wuorinen's opera 'a serious work, an impressive achievement,' praising the 'intricate, vibrantly orchestrated and often brilliant score that conveys the oppressiveness of the forces that defeat these two men.' The review also described the stage production by Belgian director Ivo van Hove as 'starkly beautiful,' with the conducting by Titus Engel drawing 'a pulsing, incisive performance' from the orchestra. The opera stars Canadian bass-baritone Daniel Okulitch and American tenor Tom Randle as the closeted ranch hands Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist. The Times review pointed out: 'The cast, to a member, embraces every chance to maximize every lyrical bit in the vocal writing.'

The Haifa Symphony Orchestra of Israel, with solo pianist Roman Rabinovich, will perform the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-Flat Minor at Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014. The program, under the direction of Maestro Boguslaw Dawidow, will also include pieces by Weber and Dvorak.
