The Civic Center of Greater Des Moines today announced that Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield will be the inaugural title sponsor for the Civic Center's new Family Series that begins with the upcoming 2009-2010 Civic Center season.
Today the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines, Central Iowa's premier not-for-profit performing arts center, announced its upcoming 2009-2010 season including the Willis Broadway Series sponsored by the Willis Auto Campus and the new Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield Family Series. JERSEY BOYS, direct from Broadway, will headline the Willis Broadway Series and makes its Iowa premiere in July 2010.

Prior seasons have included two musicals under the title Theatre for Young Audiences, but due to the enormous popularity of the children's shows MSMT is expanding its kid friendly entertainment to three titles for 2009.
Picnic, by William Inge, will open Thursday, April 2 at Stoneham Theatre. The classic American drama, set in a small Kansas town in the early 1950s, tells the story of Madge and Alan, a sweet young couple and Hal, the ex-football star and drifter who awakens Madge's true desires and shakes up the community. Most of the story takes place around a Labor Day picnic.
Picnic was first produced on Broadway in 1953 with actor Paul Newman has Hal Carter. Inge received the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the work.

The jazzy, family-friendly Broadway musical is based on the whimsical children's stories by Arnold Lobel. The story represents a compilation of different books in the series.
The show was conceived by Adrianne Lobel (Lobel's daughter) and the stories were adapted to a theatrical script by her husband, actor Mark Linn-Baker, who also played Toad when the show debuted on Broadway in 2003.
