You've probably heard a variation of this joke at a cabaret performance.  The performer will say something like "if you know the words, please don't sing along." Ann Hampton Callaway teasingly cajoles her audience to join in while she's singing a musically complex scat arrangement during her act.  When John Pizzarelli asked the The Carlyle audience to sing along as he and Daniel Jobim sang the nights closing number (Antonio Carlos Jobim's Aqua De beber), it wasn't funny.  The many Brazilians filling the seats in the Cafe  expertly chanted in Portuguese. Sometimes I find it difficult to handle the syncopated rhythms which accent the second beat of a measure in Bossa Nova, but this crowd didn't.

The concert is part of the 92Y's Art of the Guitar series and will include Maximo Diego Pujol'sSuite Magica; Alan Hovhaness' Sonata for Guitar and Harp: Spirit of Trees; Gary Schocker's Hypnosis; Keith Fitch's Knock on Wood; and Xavier Montsalvatge's Fantasia. Kondonassis and Vieaux will also each play a solo piece, with Kondonassis performing Carlos Salzedo's Chanson dans la nuit and Vieaux performing an arrangement Antonio Carlos Jobim's A Felicidade.

The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel has announced the Cafe Carlyle's spring 2015 season, which will feature some of Broadway's biggest stars, including the venue debuts of Alan Cumming and Lena Hall, and the highly anticipated return of Megan Hilty. The Organizing Committee for the 2016 Olympic Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro just announced its official mascots will be 'Vinicius' and 'Tom' -- named after legendary Bossa Nova artists Vinicius de Moraes and Antonio Carlos 'Tom' Jobim. These two vital voices in Brazilian culture were responsible, along with collaborator Luiz Bonfa, for the now iconic music at the heart of the Academy Award and Cannes Palme d'Or winning film Black Orpheus.

In a world of ever more powerful Broadway voices dominating the local Cabarets it was musically intoxicating to hear the opposite, as Birdland presented some smooth Brazilian jazz offerings this month.
