Schimmel Center with the Knickerbocker Chamber Orchestra presents the world premiere of The Struggle to Forgive: Confronting Gun Violence in America on Friday, May 4, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. Led by Music Director and Conductor Gary S. Fagin, the new cantata-which has a libretto by Fagin and features soprano Mikaela Bennett, mezzo-soprano Sarah Heltzel, and baritone Jorell Williams-gives voice to those whose lives have been impacted by gun violence in the United States, including victims and their families.

On January 26 & 27 the Paul Dresher Electro-Acoustic Band premieres Ned Rothenberg's improvised concerto Beyond C, an Ensemble commission inspired by Terry Riley's In C. Beyond C features Rothenberg as improvising woodwind soloist and Joel Davel as conductor. For this evening concert entitled BEYOND The Living Earth Show will premier selections from Dennis Aman's 24 Preludes & Fugues for invented instruments (created during Aman's 2016 Dresher Ensemble Artists Residency).

OPERA America, the national service organization for opera and the nation's leading champion for American opera, is pleased to announce that it has awarded grants to 11 opera companies through the Repertoire Development Grants program, supported by The Opera Fund. These grants provide vital financial support to opera companies developing new American opera and music-theater works.

Populist Records, the LA-based label dedicated to new music from Southern California, releases an electrifying pair of CDs on October 20: for Duane, comprising first recordings of five works by rising composer/conductor/guitarist Nicholas Deyoe, and Sweet Anxiety, featuring six solo acoustic works performed by sought-after cellist Ashley Walters.

Metropolis Ensemble Announces 2017-18 Season

Grammy-nominated Metropolis Ensemble looks forward to a prototypical season in 2017-18. This fall, Metropolis presents a five-concert piano mini-series at its loft (a former art gallery) in lower Manhattan in collaboration with long-time Metropolis associate, pianist David Kaplan. In December, the ensemble accompanies the film Bangsokol: A Requiem for Cambodia as part of BAM's Next Wave Festival. And early in 2018, Metropolis performs major new works by Timo Andres and Caroline Shaw (at the Met Museum) and William Brittelle (at Symphony Space). This formula of collaborative involvement from the earliest stages, when just the bare root of the ideas are being planted, to final culmination of the project (in collaboration with some of country's most prestigious presenters) has become a trademark of the organization.
