Soul-stirring national tour of the musical adaptation of Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel makes a powerful impression at the Bushnell in Hartford, CT

The Color Purple will return to Houston and play a limited one week engagement at the Hobby Center for Performing Arts, August 18 - 23, 2009. The return engagement was booked in response to the challenges brought on by Hurricane Ike, which caused the cancellation of a full week of sold out performances.

The 200-voice National Christian Choir (NCC) will perform at 6 p.m. March 8 in Baker Memorial Chapel on campus. Admission is free, but tickets must be reserved in advance. Directed by C. Harry Causey of Sykesville, Md., the choir comprised of members of more than 100 churches will perform Beautiful Savior,The Lord is My Strength and My Song, and We Declare Your Majesty.

The Actors Company Theatre/TACT will celebrate its 15th Anniversary with a Crystal Gala honoring renowned star of stage and screen, Julie Harris. The star-studded event will be held on Monday, March 3 at the historic Hudson Theatre, beginning at 6:30PM with cocktails, dinner, a silent and live auction and a performance including a tribute to Ms. Harris.

Transforming such a momentous story into a staged musical, as bookwriter Marsha Norman has done with The Color Purple, could not have been an easy task. What has ended up on stage more closely resembles a Disney spin on history, rather than a gritty realization of historical abuse. Yet, it strikes a soulful chord with a gospel and jazz aged sensibility, giving the musical an otherwise absent poignant heartbeat.
