BWW Reviews: LOVE STORY, THE MUSICAL Showcases BW Talent at the 14th Street Theatre
by Roy Berko
- May 7, 2013
Fanatics of chick flicks virtually swoon when they hear the words, 'Love means you never have to say you're sorry,' or someone hums a bar or two of 'Where Do I Begin?' Ah, yes, Andy Williams crooning the theme song from the 1970 film, LOVE STORY, which starred Ryan O'Neal and Ali MacGraw and holds the #9 place on the American Film Institute's list of 'most romantic films of all time.'
CABARET LIFE NYC: Sunday at the Cabaret with Corinna, Eva and Lianne -- Two Out of Three Ain't Bad
by Stephen Hanks
- Apr 25, 2013
When you're a cabaret reviewer on the evening show prowl between Monday night and Saturday evening (although not every night, thank goodness), you'd like to think that the God of Cabaret would make Sunday a day of rest. No such luck, since the weekend allows clubs to book shows as early as brunch time. I learned this again early this month when I felt compelled to attend three shows starring charming female singers-Corinna Sowers-Adler at Stage 72 (the Triad), Eva Kantor at the Laurie Beechman, and Lianne Marie Dobbs at the Metropolitan Room. I didn't break my personal Sunday record of four shows in one day set in late January (yes, I should be committed), but there was a two-hour break in this mix so it still turned out to be an 8-hour cabaret extravaganza. (Thank you, oh God of Cabaret, for press comps!) While it would have been sweet for the musical marathon to have been a clean sweep of excellent shows, as Meat Loaf might croon, 'Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad.'

Pop legend Barry Manilow will be back on Broadway in January, but between now and then he will present a series of six benefit concerts at Palm Desert's McCallum Theatre called "A Gift Of Love" with all proceeds benefiting 27 local (Coachella Valley) charities. He recently celebrated his 50th chart-topping hit on The Billboard Charts with "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town" from his new holiday CD, The Classic Christmas Album. I had the wonderful opportunity to sit down with the entertainment icon backstage at The McCallum and talk "all things Manilow". Here are a few excerpts from that interview.

BWW Reviews: Donny & Marie Bring Their Super Vegas Show to LA for the First Time
by Don Grigware
- Dec 5, 2012
It's no wonder that Donny & Marie Osmond's Vegas show won the Best in Vegas 2012, having premiered there in 2008. It's a big, splashy, hi-tech evening with all kinds of fun, popular music. They are finally recreating it at the Pantages, with the inclusion of several segments of Christmas music. There are eight terrifically flashy dancers, a live orchestra - and of course, Donny & Marie, who for the past 50 years - impossible to believe - have been part of our television family. Where would our all-American musical heritage be without Andy Williams and the Osmonds? It was the early 60s when five year-old Donny, his seven brothers and little three year-old Marie bowed on The Andy Williams Show. With that in mind, concerning all those people we hold near and dear, we may have increasingly grander expectations, but ... Donny & Marie surely do not disappoint in this, their very first show together in Los Angeles aptly titled Donnie & Marie Christmas in Los Angeles. In fact, they give it everything they've got...and that's a whole lot more than most entertainers in their 50s really give.
