Public Studio's THE URBAN RETREAT & MANAHATTA Begin Performances Tonight

The Public Theater will begin performances for Public Studio's two inaugural plays, THE URBAN RETREAT by A. Zell Williams, and MANAHATTA, by Mary Kathryn Nagle, tonight, May 15. The two plays will be presented as pared-down productions and run in repertory through Sunday, May 25 in The Public's Shiva Theater.

Bill Pullman, Marjani Forte, George Hirsch & More to Lead Arena Stages' HEALING WARS

A pioneer in the world of contemporary dance, MacArthur "Genius Grant" recipient Liz Lerman's new theatrical dance piece Healing Wars examines healing in wartime, the nature of damage that continues when battles are over and the question of how individuals and societies absorb the pain and impact of war. The production features a company of performers in multiple roles, including Marjani Forte, George Hirsch, Tamara Hurwitz Pullman, Ted Johnson, Alli Ross, Samantha Speis, Keith A. Thompson, renowned stage and film actor Bill Pullman and a combat veteran to be announced at a later date. The limited engagement, world-premiere production of Healing Wars runs June 6 - June 29 in the Arlene and Robert Kogod Cradle at Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater.

zoe | juniper's BEGINAGAIN Makes NYC Debut at 3-Legged Dog This Weekend

3-Legged Dog has announced that it is partnering with The Joyce Theater for the NYC premiere of BEGINAGAIN, a new technology infused dance experience by the acclaimed Seattle-based zoe | juniper, which is part of JOYCE UNLEASHED. Conceived, designed and directed by Zoe Scofield and Juniper Shuey, with choreography by Zoe Scofield and visual design by Juniper Shuey, BEGINAGAIN opens tonight, May 8 for a limited engagement through Saturday, May 10.

Philadelphia Orchestra and Opera Philadelphia Present First-Ever Co-Production, SALOME, Tonight

The Philadelphia Orchestra and Opera Philadelphia will join together in a first-time co-production-a theatrically-inspired production of Richard Strauss's compelling and provocative masterpiece, Salome. Two sold-out performances are set to take place tonight, May 8, and Saturday, May 10, 2014, in the Kimmel Center's Verizon Hall, and will be led by Philadelphia Orchestra Music Director Yannick Nezet-Seguin. Audiences will enjoy a groundbreaking blend of the distinctive sound of The Philadelphia Orchestra, one of the preeminent orchestras in the world, and Opera Philadelphia's dynamic theatrical presentation. These landmark performances are made possible in part by the generous support of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Wyncote Foundation, and the Presser Foundation.

Washington National Opera Presents the World Premiere of AN AMERICAN SOLDIER, 6/13-14

Washington National Opera (WNO) presents the world premiere of An American Soldier, June 13-14, 2014 in the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater. An American Soldier features music by composer Huang Ruo and a libretto by David Henry Hwang. This new work, to be performed in English, is the second hourlong opera created under the auspices of the American Opera Initiative, WNO's commissioning program for contemporary American opera. An American Soldier is directed by David Paul and a chamber orchestra is conducted by Steven Jarvi; both are alumni of WNO's Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program.

People's Light & Theatre Announces New Play Commissions

People's Light is proud to announce new play commissions for Eisa Davis, Colman Domingo, Kate Fodor, Karen Hartman, Dominique Morisseau, and Kathryn Petersen. These six playwrights are the first participants in our New Play Frontiers residency program. New Play Frontiers is an initiative to conceive, develop, and produce new plays that explore our American identity through stories of deep meaning to specific populations in the five-county region that surround our theatre.

New York Live Arts presents the U.S. premiere of Alain Buffard's Baron Samedi, tonight, May 1 - 3 at 7:30pm in the New York Live Arts Theater. Featuring a stellar international cast including Nadia Beugre, Will Rawls and David Thomson, among others, Baron Samedi pays tribute to the eponymous legendary and unsettling Carnival figure and voodoo master of ceremonies.

The Zimmerli Art Museum to Offer Free Admission, 5/16-18

The Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers announced today that it will offer free admission from Friday, May 16, through Sunday, May 18. The Zimmerli looks forward to celebrating Alumni Weekend (www.alumni.rutgers.edu) and Commencement (commencement.rutgers.edu) with other departments across the Rutgers University–New Brunswick campus. The museum also is pleased to continue its annual participation in the Association of Art Museum Directors' (AAMD aamd.org) Art Museum Day on May 18, coinciding with International Museum Day. The Zimmerli is open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Information is available at www.zimmerlimuseum.rutgers.edu.

Jessica Lang Dance Coming to The Wallis, 5/30-31

The Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts presents the West-Coast debut of Jessica Lang Dance (Jessica Lang, Artistic Director) on May 30 and 31, 2014 at the Bram Goldsmith Theater. The performance will feature a diverse array of pieces from Jessica Lang Dance's repertoire including, "Lines Cubed," "Mendelssohn / Incomplete," "Among the Stars," "The Calling," "White" (A Dance on Film) and "i.n.k."

LCT3 to Present BROWNSVILLE SONG (B-SIDE FOR TRAY), 10/4-11/16

LCT3, Lincoln Center Theater's initiative devoted to producing the work of new artists and engaging new audiences, will produce the New York premiere of brownsville song (b-side for tray), a new play by Kimber Lee, this fall. The production, to be directed by Patricia McGregor, will begin performances Saturday, October 4, running for six weeks only through Sunday, November 16 at the Claire Tow Theater (150 West 65 Street). Opening night is Monday, October 20.

New York Live Arts Presents BALDWIN THROUGH DANCE: CHARLES O. ANDERSON AND DIANNE MCINTYRE This Weekend

As part of the second annual Live Ideas festival, James Baldwin, This Time!, New York Live Artspresents Baldwin Through Dance: Charles O. Anderson and Dianne McIntyre. The shared program features the world premiere of Time is Time created and performed by acclaimed dancer and choreographer Dianne McIntyre, and the New York City premiere of Charles O. Anderson's Restless Natives.

COMMUNIQUE N°10 Opens Tonight at the Cutting Ball Theater

Cutting Ball Theater closes its 15th season with the American Premiere of COMMUNIQUE N°10 by French playwright Samuel Gallet, in a translation by Cutting Ball Artistic director Rob Melrose, who also helms this new work. Featuring Damien Seperi, Ponder Goddard, Maura Halloran, Wiley Naman Strasser, Paris Hunter Paul, Hugo Cabajal, and Aaron Malberg, COMMUNIQUE N°10 plays tonight, April 25 through May 25 (Press opening: May 1) at the Cutting Ball Theater in residence at EXIT on Taylor (277 Taylor Street) in San Francisco.

Woolly Mammoth to Close Season with THE TOTALITARIANS, 6/2-29

Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company announces the National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere of Peter Sinn Nachtrieb's The Totalitarians, a high-energy political comedy. The play explores the vacuous double-speak we invent for political gain and how this language insinuates itself into our everyday lives, relationships, and culture. Nachtrieb's work was last seen at Woolly with Season 29's Boom (2008), which went on to become the most widely produced new play in the country. Woolly Company Member and Andrew W. Mellon Playwright in Residence Robert O'Hara-the playwright and director of Season 31's Bootycandy (2011) and the playwright of Season 29's Helen Hayes Award winning Antebellum (2009)-will direct.

Sundance Institute Selects Nine Projects Including CAUGHT and THE GOOD BOOK for 2014 Theatre Lab at Sundance Resort, July 7-27

Sundance Institute today announced the nine projects selected to participate in its 2014 Theatre Lab, July 7-27 at the Sundance Resort in Utah. The Lab is the centerpiece of the Institute's year-round work with the theatre community and is one of 10 residential labs the Institute will host for artists this summer, collectively representing the most promising new independent theatre and film projects.
