BroadwayWorld Previews its Original Podcast 'Some Like it Pop' w/ Emmy Episode
by Matt Tamanini
- Sep 16, 2015
So, this fall, I decided that as part of my 366 Article in 366 Days Challenge, that I would just do suck it up and start a podcast. It's been over a decade since I interned at a sports radio station in Columbus, Ohio, and I am only moderately tech-savvy for someone straddling the line between being a part of Generation X and the Millennials. However, despite these obvious obstacles, I decided just dive in and figure it out as I go along, which has kind of been standard operating procedure for most of my life.

Andrew Rannells began his TV career in something called TAMA OF THIRD STREET: HAVE YOU SEEN MY TAMA??, from there he voiced characters on countless Japanese-animated shows for over a decade before joining the Broadway company of HAIRSPRAY in 2005. He went on to do JERSEY BOYS on tour and on Broadway, before originating the role of Elder Price in a little show called BOOK OF MORMON. Since, he has been a constant presence on TV (THE NEW NORMAL, GIRLS, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER), and with the release of THE INTERN later this month, he is now setting out to conquer the world of motion pictures.

Brynn O'Malley Answers BWW's TV 10: Geeks Out for BIG BROTHER, SEINFELD, LOST
by Matt Tamanini
- Sep 2, 2015
True story; back in January, I had an idea to talk to insanely talented Broadway stars about the TV shows that they obsess over; after all they have to have as many guilty pleasures as the rest of us, right? Then, after they answered the questions, the Broadway star would suggest another Broadway star to receive the same ridiculous TV-related treatment. Well, between Brynn starring in HONEYMOON, and me taking on all of the advertising responsibilities I mentioned yesterday, we never were able to make it happen... until now! And I have to tell you, Brynn's answers are well worth the wait!

He will soon play Bryan Buckley in Ryan Murphy's new television series The New Normal on NBC.

by Tyler Peterson
- Aug 18, 2015
The National YoungArts Foundation (YoungArts) today announces the second annual YoungArts Awareness Day, a national campaign recognizing the organization's impact on thousands of emerging artists with a call-to-action for future generations. Slated for Thursday, September 24, 2015, this year's events will take place on the heels of National Arts in Education Week to emphasize the growing need for programs that foster development, provide access to financial rewards, and present the arts as a viable career path-especially as schools are rapidly eliminating the arts within their curricula.
SOUND OFF Special Edition: 10 Classic Roles Ready For Gender-Bending
by Pat Cerasaro
- Jul 29, 2015
Lines are blurring. Gender-bending is seemingly everywhere these days, from high fashion ads to news coverage to I AM CAIT, Queen Latifah as The Wiz and beyond. Furthermore, one of the most provocative and popular stories of last week was the news of a Canadian regional production of A CHORUS LINE casting a male actor in the leading role of Cassie, renamed Casey. With the additional angle of Broadway currently being abuzz with the appearance of stage and screen star Taye Diggs stepping into the iconic high heels of the titular character in the recently multi-Tony Award-winning musical HEDWIG & THE ANGRY INCH - itself centered on a transsexual character - it seems as though now would be the ideal time to consider some other musical theatre mainstays and how they could be re-purposed and refreshed with a gender-bended twist. Although certain roles seems tailor-made to such treatment, it is illuminating to consider the rich possibilities that could potentially be afforded in the experience of witnessing the right performer of perhaps the perceivably wrong sex tackling a role normally associated with the opposite gender. Who knows, maybe a female Phantom or a make Elphaba are not that wildly spurious or far-fetched to consider given the compelling performances that have been given by unlikely actors in roles traditionally portrayed in a certain way. Theatre is nothing without reinvention and these are my top 10 picks for musicals I would like to see taken on with fresh eyes and a new outlook.

I viewed the Final Rose Ceremony with a host of Broadway and TV favorites, including Andrew Rannells, Mike Doyle, Nikki James, Zuzanna Szadkowski and Colin Donnell, as well as some non-actor friends who are willing to put up with my obsession and still come over to hang out.
