BWW Review: LET THE RIGHT ONE IN a Frightening, Captivating Good Time

With the National Theatre of Scotland's production of LET THE RIGHT ONE IN coming to town, I approached with trepidation. How would that quiet, atmospheric film translate onto the stage. The answer, it turns out, is damn well. Jack Thorne's LET THE RIGHT ONE IN is damn close to a perfect play.

BWW Review: Creepy yet Touching LET THE RIGHT ONE IN Thrills at the Moore

Is it possible to put a really good horror story on stage? It has been done to some limited success with things like "Sweeney Todd" or "The Woman in Black" and now we have the truly creepy offering from National Theatre of Scotland with their adaptation of "Let the Right One In".

BWW Reviews: BLACK WATCH at the Paramount is a Visceral Experience Not To Be Missed

More often than not when you go to see a play you do just that, see it. You attend, enjoy, let it wash over you, but still manage to stay safely detached from any unsettling things that happen during the narrative. But sometimes a play comes along that goes beyond a simple storytelling and takes its audience by the hand and propels them into the story almost allowing them to become a part of it. Sounds pretty cool right? Now imagine that story is the most vicious elements of war. And that will give you an indication of what the current show at the Paramount, "Black Watch" has to offer, a gut wrenchingly intense experience that goes beyond simple theater and leaves its audience shaken in more ways than one.

Chicago Shakespeare Theater's World's Stage Program Features Scottish Exchange, Fall 2012

In keeping with the trans-Atlantic relationship, Chicago Shakespeare and Scotland's theater community are engaged in a cultural exchange-one CST production, The Q Brothers' Othello: The Remix, is now playing to wildly enthusiastic response at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the very festival that launched two critically acclaimed National Theatre of Scotland (NTS) productions that are slated for Chicago Shakespeare's fall 2012 World's Stage series: The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart, and the return engagement of Black Watch.
