BWW Review: SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM in Good Hands at Lyric Stage

There's Sondheim music galore playing at the Lyric Stage Company as Producing Artistic Director and recognized Sondheim expert Spiro Veloudos directs an octet of Boston musical theatre performers in SONDHEIM ON SONDHEIM. In effect, the composer/lyricist is the ninth member of the ensemble as he appears onscreen, larger than life, providing intimate commentary on his life, his process, and his words and music. The video affords the opportunity to sit through a master class with the master, and the living, breathing actors demonstrate his brilliance with their starry interpretations.

BWW Review: SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION Lacks Sizzle

Bad Habit Productions continues Season 9: To Face Ourselves with John Guare's 1990 play about the interconnectedness of everyone in the world by a chain of no more than six people. In 2015, the parlor game featuring links with Kevin Bacon feels more relevant.

THREE to Close Boston Public Works' Season

Boston Public Works Theater Company will present the third and final production of its 2014-2015 Season, Three by Emily Kaye Lazzaro, running June 5 through June 20, 2015 in the Black Box Theater at the Boston Center for the Arts.

BWW Reviews: GOD BOX: Desperately Seeking Pandora

New Repertory Theatre concludes the Second Annual Next Rep Black Box Festival, celebrating the powerful voices of women theatremakers, with GOD BOX, Antonia Lassar's seriocomic solo show directed by Christine Hamel. When the quintessential Jewish mother discovers that her recently-deceased daughter had been on a journey to explore various religious beliefs, she decides to follow in the same footsteps for her own enlightenment. Lassar is a wonderful storyteller and her performance is like spiritual comfort food.

DETROIT to Play Chelsea Theatre Works

In a "first ring" suburb outside a midsize American city, Ben and Mary fire up the grill to welcome the new neighbors who've moved into the long-empty house next door. The fledgling friendship soon veers out of control, shattering the fragile hold that newly unemployed Ben and burgeoning alcoholic Mary have on their way of life. The quintessential American backyard party quickly turns into something more dangerous - and filled with potential.

BWW Reviews: THE AMISH PROJECT Haunting, Yet Hopeful

New Repertory Theatre's second annual Next Rep Black Box Festival celebrates the work of women theater artists, starting with Jessica Dickey's THE AMISH PROJECT. A fictionalized account of the 2006 shooting of Amish schoolgirls in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania, the one-woman show features Danielle Kellermann in a riveting and haunting portrayal of seven distinctive characters.

BWW Reviews: A Bridge Rep Rep: Oreos and a Father-Son Car Ride

Bridge Repertory Theater of Boston continues its second season with shows two and three running in repertory. While seemingly very different, FUFU & OREOS and SIXTY MILES TO SILVER LAKE are linked by a common theme of struggling to navigate between two worlds. As the Boston theater community examines the issue of gender parity, they are also linked by strong direction by the tandem of Rebecca Bradshaw and Shana Gozansky.

BWW REVIEW: Reading Between the Lines in DEAR ELIZABETH

Boston's Lyric Stage plumbs the poetry and prose of Elizabeth Bishop and Robert Lowell in Sara Ruhl's quietly aching DEAR ELIZABETH, a play in letters that chronicles the 30-year friendship of two lost literary souls.

BWW Reviews: Let's Talk About Language with Bad Habit Productions' TRANSLATIONS

Translations, directed by M. Bevin O'Gara, takes place in 1833 rural Ireland, with most of the action occurring in a school whose adult students often discuss incorporating English into their studies and other methods of furthering themselves in a constantly changing world. Soon, British soldiers come on the scene with the intention of remapping the country, anglicizing the Gaelic city names, and more or less attempting to wipe out the Gaelic language entirely.

BWW Review: Three Hostages and a Captive Audience

Bad Habit Productions stages Frank McGuinness' 1992 play in the intimate confines of Deane Hall in the Calderwood Pavilion at the Boston Center for the Arts. The entire piece is told through story telling and constant rock music, as these two trace their meeting, the development of their relationship, and how stardom affects their personal lives.
