American Repertory Ballet Announces VIVA SPRING at South Orange Performing Arts Center, 4/5

American Repertory Ballet will make its debut at South Orange Performing Arts Center on April 5, 2013 at 8:00pm with its Viva Spring program. The evening will feature ARB Artistic Director Douglas Martin's brand new Rite of Spring, famed Joffrey Ballet choreographer Gerald Arpino's Viva Vivaldi, and contemporary dance choreographer Patrick Corbin's new work, Caress. These works span classical and contemporary movement and music, presenting a range of styles to appeal to a variety of tastes.

American Repertory Ballet's acclaimed DANCE POWER program in the New Brunswick Public School District will culminate with performances featuring over 500 students this March and April. Established in 1984, DANCE POWER brings dance education into New Brunswick elementary schools and offers opportunities for select students to study at Princeton Ballet School on full scholarship. The annual Waiting in the Wings showcase for third grade DANCE POWER students will take place on Monday, March 18, 2013 at 7:00 pm at the New Brunswick High School. On April 8, 2013 at 7:00pm, also at New Brunswick High School, the new second grade DANCE POWER program will hold its first full performance, featuring over 150 students. Both performances will be free and open to the public.

American Repertory Ballet will return to the Princeton Public Library this year to present special insight into its upcoming programming. Tonight, March 7, 2013 at 7:30pm, ARB Artistic Director Douglas Martin will discuss his new Romeo and Juliet and Rite of Spring ballets, both of which ARB will unveil this spring. Also at this event, the virtuosic dancers of ARB will perform excerpts of both these ballets, giving audiences exclusive previews of these world premieres.

American Repertory Ballet will return to Raritan Valley Community College on March 23 at 8:00pm to present In Full Bloom, an evening of world premieres, Stravinsky, Vivaldi, and more. The program will feature Artistic Director Douglas Martin's brand new Rite of Spring, set to Stravinsky's score, ARB Resident Choreographer Mary Barton's vibrant Five Men and a Concerto, and a new athletic and contemporary work by Patrick Corbin.

Audee Estey, a native of Winnipeg, Canada, began teaching in the Princeton area after marrying L. Wendell "Bud"Estey, a teacher at the Lawrenceville School, in 1933. Among her hundreds of students were Meredith Monk, Douglas Dunn, Bebe Neuwirth, Diane Partington, and Jennifer Dunning. She founded Princeton Ballet Society in 1954 (now Princeton Ballet School) and the Princeton Regional Ballet Company in 1963.

Maria Youskevitch, longtime faculty member at Princeton Ballet School, is one of this year's American Repertory Ballet Gala Honorees, and is the recipient of this year's Audree Estey Award for Excellence in Dance Education. Daughter of one of the leading dancers of the 20th century, Igor Youskevitch, Ms. Youskevitch brings a strong background in and deep knowledge of ballet to her students. She teaches for a variety of levels and, every year, re-stages a full-length classical ballet on Princeton Ballet School students for the School's Spring Production. She has also served as Rehearsal Director for American Repertory Ballet, the professional company associated with Princeton Ballet School, on several occasions.

On February 22, American Repertory Ballet will present an inside look at its upcoming spring performance season.This On PointeEnrichment Series event, "Spring Repertory Preview", will be held at 5:15pm in the Company's rehearsal studios at Princeton Ballet School (301 North Harrison Street, above McCaffrey's Supermarket). ARB launched its On Pointe series in 2010 to help make ballet more accessible to the community by offering free lecture demonstrations, guest lectures, intimate company performance previews, and panel discussions.

American Repertory Ballet has announced upcoming events throughout New Jersey this Spring 2013. Based in Princeton, ARB has been consistently designated a "Major Arts Institution" by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts for the past two decades, and, in 2008 and 2011, was voted Jersey Arts' People's Choice for Favorite Dance Company. American Repertory Ballet will present its first 'Emerging Artist Showcase' with performances at 8:00 PM tonight, October 26th, and Saturday, October 27th at Princeton Ballet School's Studio A, 301 North Harrison Street in the Princeton Shopping Center, above McCaffrey's Supermarket. The performances will feature choreography created and performed by the dancers of American Repertory Ballet and the ARB/Princeton Ballet School Trainee Program. While no one will be turned away at the door, a suggested donation of $10 will go directly to the artists.
