Columbia Festival of the Arts presents Julie Taymor's "Frida" Friday, April 8, 2016 7:00-9:30pm

High finance, family dysfunction, death -- and laughs. The world premiere of DINNER AT HOME BETWEEN DEATHS, a pitch-black comedy by Andrea Lepcio (Looking for the Pony), directed by Stuart Ross (Forever Plaid) and presented by Indie Chi Productions, opens as a guest production at the Odyssey Theatre tonight, April 2.

Westport Country Playhouse will open its 2016 Season with two Tony Award-winning plays staged in repertory, "Art" and "Red," with each play alternating daily, from May 3 through May 29.  "Art" by Yasmina Reza, translated by Christopher Hampton, and "Red" by John Logan, will be directed by Mark Lamos, Playhouse artistic director.  Each of the plays is about art:  making it, owning it, the anguish of creating it, and the ache of believing in it.

Recent 2016 Rising Star Award-winning classical Spanish guitarist Mark Edwards has already sold out his 4:00pm performance at Oliver's Carriage House on April 17th. Executive Director Todd Olson has added a second, 7:00pm, performance for Edwards due to popular demand.

Williamstown Theatre Festival has announced that HANNAH AND THE DREAD GAZEBO by Jiehae Park is the 2016 L. Arnold Weissberger New Play Award recipient. Jiehae will also receive The Jay Harris Commission to write a new play, a prize worth $10,000.

Manhattan Theatre Club just announced the lineup for this spring's Ernst C. Stiefel Reading Series, which kicks off next Monday, March 14.

Let's take a trip back in time, shall we? The year was 1993 (or '94, or '95....'96?), I was 7 (or 8, or 9...10?) years old, and my parents took my sister and me to the Three Little Bakers dinner theater in Wilmington, Delaware, where 'Fiddler On The Roof' was playing. Unfortunately, I don't remember much about this experience other than that it was the first time I ever had a Shirley Temple, the waitress made me cry, and the line for the prime rib buffet was very long. This was, however, the first time those famous first strains of Jerry Bock's violin solo entered the back of my brain and psyche, and never left. Over the next several years, Fiddler lightly weaved its way in and out of my life: the occasional off key rendition of 'Sunrise, Sunset' at Jewish Community North, catching the film on AMC, and that community theatre production that my synagogue's men's club brought their families to (ironically enough, the girl playing Hodel ended up being my prom date). While at Juilliard, my best friend, Scott and I saw the 2004 revival together TWICE. Once with Alfred Molina, and another time with Harvey Fierstein and Rosie O'Donnell. For over a decade, it's been part of our rotation of inside jokes to cast Tevye and Golde with obscure and asinine choices of actors, then perform 'Do You Love Me', impersonating said actors (Keanu Reaves as Tevye and Paula Deen as Golde, anyone?). As an American suburban Jewish kid growing up in the late '90s/early 00's, Fiddler was just part of the narrative -- Chinese Food on Christmas.

WHISKEY TANGO FOXTROT hits theaters March 4, 2016! Directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, the comedy stars Tina Fey, Margot Robbie, Martin Freeman, Alfred Molina and Billy Bob Thornton.

If the term “up-and-coming actor” needed a poster child, last year I would have said Eddie Redmayne would be a perfect match, owing to his Oscar win as Stephen Hawking in the acclaimed film THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING. Now, I would say the 34-year old British actor has moved from the up-and-coming category into the column of established film actors. This Oscar season, Redmayne will once again face the red carpet and the possibility of leading actor Academy Award for his role in THE DANISH GIRL as the artist Einar who faces a personal conflict and the expectations of society when he transitions to Lily in the early 20th century.

Disney's Emmy Award-winning animated series GRAVITY FALLS reaches its final showdown in the highly anticipated one-hour finale episode tonight, FEBRUARY 15 (7:00 p.m. EST) on Disney XD.

Williamstown Theatre Festival's annual Gala was just held at City Winery in New York City (155 Varick Street) last night, February 8, 2016. The evening  included cocktails, dinner, and live auction led by Charity Auctioneer Robbie Gordy of Christie's New York. Hosted by Jessica Hecht and David Hyde Pierce, the evening included special appearances and performances by: star of stage and screen Ana Gasteyer, Telly Leung (Broadway's Allegiance), Lindsay Mendez (Broadway's Wicked), New York's hottest new band Sky-Pony (led by Tony Award-nominated singer/actress Lauren Worsham and musician/writer Kyle Jarrow), and more. Williamstown Theatre Festival hosted its starry 2016 gala this evening at City Winery in New York City, where Artistic Director Mandy Greenfield announced the initial lineup for this summer's season -- the 62nd for the Tony Award-winning theatre company. Among the big names slated for the 2016 Summer Season are Alfred Molina, Marisa Tomei, Jane Kaczmarek and Michael Stuhlbarg.
