Review Roundup: Critics Weigh In On ANNIHILATION

Based on Jeff VanderMeer's best-selling Southern Reach Trilogy, Annihilation stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny and Oscar Isaac. It was written and directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, 28 Days Later).

BWW Review: Fantastic Z's NEXT FALL a Beautiful Play with an Uneven Emotional Core

There are two things, Dear Readers, that drive me crazy in watching any theatrical endeavor, shmacting and not listening, we'll dive into the meanings of those more in a bit, but what they accomplish is sapping the emotional core from a show. Fantastic Z's current production of Next Fall partially suffers from these dilemmas in that half of the cast is guilty of it. And in a show like this, only half an emotional core is just not enough.

BWW Review: Fantastic.Z's Short Play Series FAMILY Modern and Sweet

Keeping it brief, since the show only runs through this Saturday, LGBTQ theater group Fantastic.Z has a series of short plays currently performing at The Eclectic Theater called 'Family'. The six-play series has a family motif, each story showcasing modern examples of what it means to be a unit in the modern era. In a more deductive sense, this new works micro-festival highlights specifically pain within the family unit. Half of the shows work through that pain less successfully with staged therapy (moping, finger-pointing, and yelling), and the other half of the show work through that pain more successfully with comedy.

BWW Review: Fantastic Z's BAD PANDA Examines Alternative Families

In this ever-changing society of ours it's nice to see shows that take a look at different kinds of love and families. Such is the case with Megan Gogerty's "Bad Panda" currently being offered from Fantastic Z Theatre. And while at times the script felt a bit heavy handed and the production lacked some levels, the show as a whole is a sweet and touching look at another way to look at the issue of what truly makes a family.

BWW Review: Not Man Apart's PARADISE LOST: RECLAIMING DESTINY Viscerally Recreates The Fall of Man

There's not a chance in hell that an audience member could fail to be engaged in Not Man Apart Physical Theatre Ensemble's latest new work, PARADISE LOST: RECLAIMING DESTINY. The company has found a tantalizing niche with its athletically rich dance, movement & sensory exploration of stories that literally leap off the stage into the stratosphere. This latest production pushes that unique concept to new heights as it invokes the mighty forces of good and evil in a struggle of epic proportions.

BWW Review: Fantastic Z's DEVIL BOYS FROM BEYOND a Bit Too Campy

Fantastic Z Theatre is closing out their season of gay comedy with the campy take on 50's sci-fi, Buddy Thomas and Kenneth Elliott's 'Devil Boys From Beyond'. And while this crazy romp certainly has the fun of their previous shows, at times the camp gets to be a bit much to the point of lacking focus and it's there where the play suffers.

BWW Review: Fantastic Z's PSYCHO BEACH PARTY Provides Hot Kitschy Hilarity

I'll admit I'm quite picky and protective about the works of Charles Busch. He's one of my favorite authors with his brilliant ability to tell a well thought out story through the kitschy lens of 40's, 50's and 60's pop culture. I've been fortunate enough to see the master himself perform his own works three times. I've only ever seen a local production attempt one of his works once before (a dreadful bastardization of “Vampire Lesbians of Sodom” that need never be mentioned again). So when I heard that Fantastic Z was performing his most well known work, “Psycho Beach Party” AND it was opening on my birthday I thought this could either be a wonderful thing or the universe playing a cruel joke. Well lucky for me (and for all of you) the folks at Fantastic Z and director Kyle Baiz must have as much love and respect for the piece as I do as they managed a fun and frothy, pitch perfect production.

BWW Column: Oscar Nominations Maintain Status Quo, but I've Still Got Thoughts

Happy holidays movie nerds! Nominations were announced for the 88th Annual Academy Awards this morning, and while I don't believe that there were any glaring, outrage-inducing snubs, I am going to go through the major categories and share some knee-jerk reactions. As is often the case for those of us that follow movie releases and award shows closely, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences didn't throw too many curveballs in this year's nominations, which means that there are a lot of people that have seen many of the nominees in the major categories. In fact, the Best Picture nominees have pulled in almost $602 million at the domestic box office, a pretty big number, considering half of them were released in the last two months and had to contend with the behemoth that is STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS.
