Dallas Opera Launches New Art Song Series Today

The Dallas Opera has announced that, through the generosity of The Titus Family, a brand-new recital series has been created to showcase well-established singers in programs dedicated to preserving the fine art of “art song.” The series launch will take place tonight, January 4, 2014 in Dallas City Performance Hall (2520 Flora Street, Dallas) at 7:30 p.m.

Music Academy of the West to Honor Marilyn Horne with CARMEN in 2014

The Music Academy of the West will honor legendary mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne, the director of the Academy's renowned Voice Program who celebrates her 80th birthday on January 16, 2014, with special programming during its 2014 Summer Festival. The centerpiece of the Horne tribute programming will be a new production of Georges Bizet's immensely popular opera Carmen, one of the iconic mezzo's signature roles. Related programming next summer will include a screening of the 1954 musical film Carmen Jones, which features Horne's dubbed singing for actress Dorothy Dandridge. Additional events will be announced in the coming months.

English conductor Jane Glover will make her Met debut on December 16 leading the company's holiday presentation, an abridged, English-language production of Mozart's The Magic Flute, directed by Julie Taymor. The 100-minute version of Taymor's popular staging of the opera will star Alek Shrader as the brave prince Tamino; Heidi Stober as Pamina, the princess he must rescue; Eric Owens as the mysterious Sarastro; Shenyang as the Speaker; and Nathan Gunn as the hapless bird-catcher Papageno. Albina Shagimuratova and Kathryn Lewek will alternate in the role of Pamina's vindictive mother, the Queen of the Night. The Magic Flute launched the recent Met tradition of presenting a family-oriented production each holiday season, with sharply discounted tickets and two special weekday matinee performances. Music Academy of the West's 2013 Summer Season Announced

The Music Academy of the West will present a cultural feast of more than 200 events during its 2013 Summer School and Festival, which starts on June 17 and runs through August 10. Among the highlights of this year's festival will be a new production of Mozart's beloved opera The Magic Flute - Santa Barbara's first in 15 years - as well as the West Coast premiere of bereshit by Matthias Pintscher, who is regarded as one of the most sought-after young German composers of his generation. "Magic, Legend, and Ritual" is the festival's theme, and the 66th anniversary season will present performances by violinist Midori, pianist Jeremy Denk, baritone Vladimir Chernov, and the Takacs and Brooklyn Rider string quartets - as well as conducting turns by Leonard Slatkin, James Gaffigan, Bernard Labadie, and Nicholas McGegan. Showcasing the Academy's talented Fellows, together with star guest performers and faculty, the events will be presented at the Academy's scenic Miraflores campus and in venues throughout Santa Barbara.
