New York Philharmonic Chairman Oscar S. Schafer and President Matthew VanBesien today announced that conductor Jaap van Zweden will become the Orchestra's next Music Director, beginning in 2018-19, the Orchestra's 177th season. Mr. van Zweden will serve as Music Director Designate in the 2017-18 season.
The New York Philharmonic will present Messiaen Week, March 7-13, 2016, honoring the legacy of French composer and organist Olivier Messiaen (1908-92) through performances of his works, from the symphonic to solo works, as well as music by those whom he influenced.
Christoph Eschenbach returns to the New York Philharmonic to conduct a program of works by Eastern European composers with folk influences: Bartok's Violin Concerto No. 2, featuring violinist Baiba Skride in her Philharmonic debut and first New York City orchestral appearance, and Dvorak's Carnival Overture and Symphony No. 8, Thursday, February 25, 2016, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, February 26 at 2:00 p.m.; Saturday, February 27 at 8:00 p.m.; and Tuesday, March 1 at 7:30 p.m.

The legendary Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra returns to Carnegie Hall this February for three consecutive concerts in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage conducted by Valery Gergiev. Amazon's hit television show, MOZART IN THE JUNGLE kicks off its second season on December 30, 2015. The show follows a fictional (albeit, based in reality) orchestra in New York led by the exciting and controversial Rodrigo de Souza (Gael Garcia Bernal) loosely based on LA Philharmonic conductor, Gustavo Dudamel. The show is based on Blair Tindall's novel of the same name of her experiences with professional classical music in New York and San Francisco. I had the fortune of speaking with Ms. Tindall about her transition from musician to author to TV consultant.
The seventh season of CONTACT!, the New York Philharmonic's new-music series, continues with 'Salonen's Floof and Other Delights,' curated and hosted by The Marie-Jose?e Kravis Composer-in-Residence Esa-Pekka Salonen, featuring music written by him and composers who influenced him. The program features Lutos?awski's String Quartet, Donatoni's Hot, Castiglioni's Dulce refrigerium, and Esa-Pekka Salonen's Floof (Songs of a Homeostatic Homer). Pianist Emanuel Ax joins the LA Phil in three performances led by conductor Daniel Harding at Walt Disney Concert Hall, Friday and Saturday, January 8 and 9, at 8 pm, and Sunday, January 10, at 2 pm. The Music Institute of Chicago celebrates the 10th anniversary of its Academy program, which has educated and prepared gifted pre-college musicians for professional training and music careers, with several public events in 2016. On Saturday, February 6, renowned violinist/violist/conductor Pinchas Zukerman gives a master class for Academy students, free and open to the public, and Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) Principal Clarinetist Stephen Williamson performs chamber music with Academy students. Both events take place at Nichols Concert Hall, 1490 Chicago Avenue, Evanston.
