Blacken Blues Theater Presents BIRMINGHAM IS STILL BURNING... BUT SO IS AMERICA

The American pie has limited slices. So we determine who gets what based on racism, sexism, classism or any other ism that breeds social oppression. Self preservation subjugates our humanity for the sake of survival. And the pursuit of the American dream causes us to live on the periphery of morality. The Conscious Theater Project is a series of plays written by award winning playwright and social activist Willie Holmes. Holmes explains, 'Each work explores the moral dilemma of a democratic society without social empathy.

Like every high school senior before, Lipscomb Academy's Addison McFarlin and Keller Montgomery are trying to store away as many memories as possible during their final year of high school, while maintaining their GPAs, going to class and being a part of campus life. But Addison and Keller are actors, so their schedules are even fuller, particularly this week as they find themselves in the middle to Tech Week for Lipscomb Academy's fall musical Big Fish, directed by Kari Smith.

BWW Review: Washington Concert Opera Serves Up a Seductive SAPHO

If you have ever attended an opera and thought 'all of these sets and costumes are so incredibly distracting' then Washington Concert Opera would be right up your alley. Stripping away the grandiose of an opera production, WCO presents their works in their most raw form: with just an orchestra, a chorus, and principles who sing their hearts out. This minimalist style isn't likely to convert opera skeptics, but it is a great way to deepen one's appreciation for the art form. Their most recent presentation of Charles Gounod's first opera, Sapho, benefits from some strong lead performances. It's just a shame that the libretto isn't better.

BWW Review: A CHRISTMAS CAROL Charms Again at Trinity Rep

Trinity Rep's annual A CHRISTMAS CAROL production is always delightful in new and exciting ways. This year, they've partnered with 56 choirs from Rhode Island (and a few from Massachusetts) to make each show unique and feature even more local talent. This is a lovely addition to the classic story, and another way that Trinity manages to give this play something new year after year. Set in a classic Victorian backdrop, this year's production features lots of singing and dancing, and some pretty fantastic effects and performances.
