JOSEPH is one of my favorite escapist musical theatre scripts. I love the music, the creativity of taking a Bible story and making it into a pleasant family experience without getting preachy. The version now on stage at the Palace was not one of my favorite stagings of the show. Audiences will generally like it, but it could have been 'One More Angel in Heaven,' at least in show business firmament, but it wasn't.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts today announced its 2014- 2015 theater season today, including the pre-Broadway engagement of Gigi featuring a re-envisioned book by Heidi Thomas with direction by Eric Schaeffer. The Kennedy Center will also produce the world premiere musical Little Dancer with book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, music by Stephen Flaherty, and direction and choreography by Susan Stroman; touring productions of Evita, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and Once; and back by popular demand following its record-breaking six week engagement in 2013, the multi-Tony Award®-winning musical from the creators of South Park, The Book of Mormon, will return for a limited engagement. In a sure sign spring is near, The Bushnell announced today its 2014-2015 Broadway Series season. Beginning in September 2014, The Bushnell will bring seven popular Broadway titles to Hartford as part of the Series, along with an additional off-Series blockbuster to round out a strong season lineup. Series titles are Broadway classics EVITA, JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT, and CAMELOT, last year's Tony-winning Best Musical Revival, PIPPIN, Gershwin tuner NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT, and back-to-back Tony Award-winning Best Musicals ONCE and KINKY BOOTS. The phenomenal crowd-pleaser WICKED was also announced to return to Hartford for three weeks in November as a special off-subscription offering.

Earlier this week Broadway Records released the concept cast recording of Ron Yatter's musical SAMSON & DELILAH. Featuring American Idol alums and current stars of the latest National Tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber's JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT Ace Young and Diana DeGarmo in the titular roles, the pop score is sung with radio-friendly vocal styling but fails to truly impress.
