Berkeley Rep Sets Summer Residency Lab Projects

Today, The Ground Floor: Berkeley Rep's Center for the Creation and Development of New Work announces that it has selected 18 projects for its fifth Summer Residency Lab featuring works from more than 30 talented artists. This June, as part of an extraordinary laboratory for collaboration, some of the nation's most prominent and promising writers, directors, designers, performers, and composers will unite at the Theatre's Harrison Street campus over an intense four-week period to share ideas, break bread, and create new plays. Dozens more local and out-of-town actors and directors will join the Summer Residency Lab, bringing the number of participating artists close to 100.

Clubbed Thumb Announces SUMMERWORKS Festival Lineup

?Five-time Obie Award-winning theater company Clubbed Thumb has announced the line-up for SUMMERWORKS, its annual series of new plays. Now in its 21st season, SUMMERWORKS will run May 27 through July 9 at The Wild Project (195 E 3rd Street) in Manhattan, and will feature productions of three new plays: EVERY ANGEL IS BRUTAL by Julia Jarcho and directed by Knud Adams; THE TOMB OF KING TOT by Eric Dufault and directed by Portia Krieger; and TUMACHO by Ethan Lipton and directed by Leigh Silverman. On February 12, 1915, the Abrons Arts Center's Henry Street Settlement Playhouse opened its doors on the Lower East Side. Since that day, it has remained a vital cultural resource, providing audiences with artistically bold work while offering artists opportunities to dynamically grow. Since becoming Abrons Director in 2006, Jay Wegman has done much more than maintain 'one of the last standing locations for avant-garde performance downtown' (The New York Times, 2009). He has created an arts venue that is unique on the city's cultural landscape, presenting an international mix of cutting-edge performing and visual artists, both established and emerging, from across the country and around the world, as well as from New York City.

Due to popular demand, The Public Theater announced a second and final two-week extension for Elevator Repair Service's acclaimed THE SOUND AND THE FURY. Chosen as a New York Times Critics' Pick, THE SOUND AND THE FURY began performances in The Public's Martinson Theater on Thursday, May 14 and was originally extended to Saturday, June 27. Directed by John Collins, the show will now run an additional two weeks through Sunday, July 12. THE SOUND AND THE FURY marks the third collaboration between The Public and Elevator Repair Service, having previously presented Gatz and Arguendo.

As part of the tenth edition of the COIL festival, Performance Space 122 and New Ohio Theatre present the world premiere of Sorry Robot, the playwriting debut of beloved performer and Bessie-Award-winning composer Mike Iveson, best know for his work with Sibyl Kempson, Elevator Repair Service and choreographer Sarah Michelson. In Sorry Robot, four performers and a piano create a haunting world where robots long to experience the same emotions that their embarrassing, sort-of-pathetic human masters feel. In a hotel that doubles as a software development facility in an ever-dystopian Florida, the machines of the future set out to prove they can do almost anything but shut up.

The French Institute Alliance Francaise (FIAF), New York's premiere French cultural center, today announces the full program for Crossing the Line 2014, the eighth annual edition of its celebrated fall arts festival, presenting interdisciplinary works and performances by artists from around the world. Crossing the Line runs from September 8 through October 20 in venues throughout New York City. Nespresso returns as Presenting Sponsor of Crossing the Line in 2014. Following a 2013 world premiere at Theater Basel in Switzerland, New York City Players presents the U.S. premiere of Isolde. Returning to a core group of collaborators, Isolde, written and directed by Maxwell, features an ensemble of New York City Players veterans including Jim Fletcher, Brian Mendes, Tory Vazquez and Gary Wilmes. Maxwell's choice to not use any music in Isolde further supports a desire to excavate his own characteristically distilled approach to story telling. Isolde was inspired by the legend of Tristan and Isolde.
