Infinitely inspired by the atmosphere of pop, Angelica Allen, also known by the moniker My Midnight Heart, sings to her own beat. Her melodies, undeniably distinct, are a beacon of both darkness and light. Having released her debut EP Chest of Hearts in 2013 to critical acclaim, the siren has returned to release two short EPs this month, Drown and Break.

And the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner is far from ready to call it quits, though he is planning to leave the traveling life behind. But first, he'll celebrate the March 10, 2015 release of his 62nd (or so) album, Redemption Road; launch a two-month tour with Janis Ian on March 4; and head to his hometown of Bristow, Okla., for his March 14 induction into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame. He'll also run across the pond in May for several U.K. dates, and likely keep stage-hopping through 2015.

As my eyes panned across the Geffen Playhouse stage before the opening of Conor McPherson's The Night Alive, I could not help but notice the large poster of the film The Great Escape on the wall of Takeshi Kata's set of the dingy Edwardian house in Phoenix Park, Dublin that is the home of Maurice, nephew Tommy and sometimes business partner Doc. Would it tell something about the characters' plight or condition? After all, this is contemporary Dublin, Ireland. There's poverty, isolation and about as much unhappiness as one would find anywhere else in the world in this day and age, maybe more.
What determines an artistic institution's longevity? How does such an institution thrive after the social, political, and economic forces that engendered it have disappeared? Museums, orchestras, theater and dance companies face these questions as they struggle to succeed in the cultural Darwinism that determines their survival. Some succeed. Others don't. New York City Ballet is a notable success story.
It's mid-February and all the stores are filled with red hearts and chocolates in an effort to bamboozle us into thinking love is in the air. Frankly, it may still be too chilly for love to survive in the air. Despite this, Alysha Umphress and Joshua Henry heated up 54 BELOW earlier this week with their sizzling, jazzy cabaret Romantic Duets.

Produced and recorded in her hometown of Austin with her son, Cisco Ryder, The Nocturne Diaries is a restless contemplative work inspired by the converging forces of her highest hopes and darkest fears. The songs range from roots rockers to a haunting version of the folk classic 'Fast Freight' written by her father, Terry Gilkyson.
If you look up the word 'perfection' in the dictionary, after the actual definition, you'll see a picture… a teeny tiny little picture. Do you know who it's a picture of? William Shakespeare. Don't believe me? Go look it up. Did you see it? Ok… so maybe I lied about the picture of my pal Will being in the dictionary. But someone should seriously consider it, right? Hey, Webster, get on that! While we wait on Webster to do what's right by Will, I'd like to tell you about my experience at Slidell Little Theatre this past weekend for their very unique production of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM.

The four-night Mabel Mercer Foundation's annual Cabaret Convention at Lincoln's Center's Rose Hall in late October has become arguably the most important cabaret event of the year. For the most part, it is a star-studded affair featuring celebrated veteran performers and exciting young newcomers. Night four of this year's 25th Convention featured a 'Songs of Irving Berlin' theme hosted by the popular Klea Blackhurst, and starring acclaimed cabaret entertainers such as Anita Gillette, Karen Mason, Sidney Myer, Karen Oberlin, and Stacy Sullivan. Also in the lineup was a relatively unknown vocalist named Celia Berk.
