Special Offer: A Haunting Chamber Opera: Painted Skin - US Premiere | Oct 15, Jazz at Lincoln Center

The US-China Music Institute of the Bard College Conservatory of Music, in collaboration with China's Central Conservatory of Music, announces the fifth season of the China Now Music Festival, from October 7 to 22.

OPERA America has announced the recipients of the 2022 IDEA Opera Residencies (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access) program, an initiative that provides New York City-based composers and librettists of color an opportunity to explore opera as an expressive medium. The program is supported by the Katherine S. and Axel G. Rosin Fund of The Scherman Foundation.

Conducted by CSO Music Director Rossen Milanov, this exotic, multi-media program presents a sensuous mix of eastern and middle-eastern colors.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art will host its annual Lunar New Year festival on Sunday, February 5, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lunar New Year Festival: Year of the Rooster will feature dozens of engaging programs-for visitors of all ages-that reflect traditions from across Asia.

“The word and genre 'opera' is much broader and more inclusive in the 21st century than it was in the past,” says Huang Ruo, composer/co-librettist of PARADISE INTERRUPTED, his mesmerizing, tantalizing opera that was one of the opening selections of this year's Lincoln Center Festival.

Although the solstice doesn't officially appear for another week or so, the summer opera clock is already ticking. There's a plethora of performances going on all over New York City, in addition to interesting, entertaining and fascinating productions that are just a hop, skip and jump away. Among them: Lincoln Center's Lincoln Center Festival and Mostly Mozart and On Site Opera's West Village venue, to the more bucolic realms of Bard SummerScape in Dutchess County (NY) for Mascagni and Caramoor in Katonah (NY) for Rossini and Beethoven.

Single tickets to Lincoln Center Festival shows-highlights this year include legendary stars of Japan's all-female musical troupe, Takarazuka, in Takarazuka CHICAGO; Jonathan Pryce as Shylock in Shakespeare'sGlobe production of The Merchant of Venice; Balkan superstar Goran Bregovic and his raucous Wedding and Funeral Orchestra; and the National Ballet of Canada performances of Christopher Wheeldon's The Winter's Tale-will go on sale to Friends of Lincoln Center on April 1 and to the general public on April 11. The festival runs from Wednesday, July 13 through Sunday, July 31, 2016, with 49 performances by artists and ensembles from seven countries taking place in seven venues on and off the Lincoln Center campus.

Nigel Redden, Director of Lincoln Center Festival, today announced the line-up for the Festival, which runs from July 13-31, 2016. Artists and ensembles from seven countries, many of them making their Lincoln Center Festival debuts, will gather for the festival, now celebrating its 20th anniversary, and which continues its mission of presenting the finest classical and contemporary arts from around the world.  An array of 49 dance, music, and theater performances will animate seven venues on and off the Lincoln Center campus.

Excerpts from Paradise Interrupted, a new installation opera by artist Jennifer Wen Ma and composer Huang Ruo, will be performed in The Metropolitan Museum of Art's The Temple of Dendur in The Sackler Wing today, March 21. The Met Museum Presents performances offer a special preview of this work in progress before the world premiere at the 2015 Spoleto Festival USA in May. There will be two Metropolitan Museum performances at 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Tickets start at $54 and are available online atmetmuseum.org/tickets or by phone (212) 570-3949. Tickets include Museum admission and are part of the Museum's 'Bring the Kids for $1' program.

2015 marks the centennial of the Metropolitan Museum's Department of Asian Art. In the Year of the Ram, which officially began during Lunar New Year in February 2015, the department will present 19 exhibitions and installations organized for a one-year celebration of its formidable holdings of art from across Asia. The department today oversees more than 50 galleries and one of the most comprehensive collections of Asian art anywhere in the world.

The Civilians: The End and The Beginning Today, March 6, 7:00 p.m. at The Temple of Dendur in The Sackler Wing A theatrical investigation of dying, death, and the afterlife, from ancient Egypt to tomorrow. This performance is staged at the incomparable Temple of Dendur.

The Costume Institute's spring 2015 exhibition, China: Through the Looking Glass, will be on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art from May 7 through August 16, 2015 (preceded on May 4 by The Costume Institute Benefit). Presented in the Museum's Chinese Galleries and Anna Wintour Costume Center, the exhibition will explore how China has fueled the fashionable imagination for centuries, resulting in highly creative distortions of cultural realities and mythologies. In this collaboration between The Costume Institute and the Department of Asian Art, high fashion will be juxtaposed with Chinese costumes, paintings, porcelains, and other art, as well as films, to reveal enchanting reflections of Chinese imagery.
