Phillip Bernard Smith found his way into an acting career in 1992 at the North Carolina Black Repertory Company (NCBRC) performing in DON’T BOTHER ME, I CAN’T COPE, CELEBRATIONS: AN AFRICAN ODYSSEY, and as Rashad in THE MEETING with the founder of the NCBRC, the late Larry Leon Hamlin. Phillip soon joined the NC Black Repertory Company as an actor-in-residence and worked in the office for with Mr. Hamlin. He later co-wrote and performed with Phyllis Yvonne Stickney in the production BIG MAMA ‘NEM at the 1993 National Black Theatre Festival. He traveled to Baltimore, MD, New York City and Detroit, MI, performing in ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, A GOSPEL AT COLONUS, JOE TURNER COME AND GONE, WEST MEMPHIS MOJO, and A SOLDIER’S PLAY. After a seven year hiatus, Phillip returned home to North Carolina performing in THE PIANO LESSON, Samm-Art Williams’ The LAST OF THE LINE and HOME, LET THEM BE HEARD winning (Best Humanities Award), RADIO GOLF (Best Supporting Actor), THE WHIPPING MAN (Best Lead Actor), GEM OF THE OCEAN, THE MOUNTAINTOP, were he recently received 4 stars for his roles as Dr. King in The Mountaintop in the Raleigh Indy-weekly at Justice Theatre Project, BLUES IN THE NIGHT, NONE OF THE ABOVE, COURT, Ted Lange’s BORN A UNICORN, THE COLOR PURPLE, and THE ROYALE. In addition to being a part of the JTP family, Phillip is currently a counselor/teaching in Raleigh, NC and the founding Artist of the MAHOGANY STAGE THEATRE COMPANY in Morrisville, NC.

Phillip Bernard Smith Joins the Cast of DONTRELL WHO KISSED THE SEA at RhinoLeap


RhinoLeap welcomes back Phillip Bernard Smith. He joins the cast of DONTRELL WHO KISSED THE SEA. His previous RhinoLeap productions includes, Leaving Eden and Driving Miss Daisy. Some of his other theatre credits are The Mountaintop, Gem of The Ocean, Radio Golf, The Piano Lesson, The Royale, The Whipping Man, Once on This Island, The Meeting, The Color Purple, Porgy and Bess, Gospel at Colonus, Macbeth, and Twelfth Night.

Burning Coal Theatre Company will present Marco Ramirez's The Royale, a drama based on the life of heavyweight boxing champion Jack Johnson. The play will run April 6 – 8, 13 – 15, 20 – 22 at 7:30 PM, and April 9, 16, and 23 at 2:00 PM. in Burning Coal Theatre's Murphey School Auditorium (located at 224 Polk Street, Raleigh, NC 27604).
