To continue their tradition of producing a classic musical during the summer, the South Bend Civic Theatre presented Oliver! with a cast of more than 40 people to filled audiences. The tone of the show was instantly set with a wonderfully charming London bridge designed by Jeff Barrick. Unfortunately the tone was then smashed by a horribly electric sounding music track of the overture with trumpets that were more reminiscent of synthesizers than anything else. This confusing clash continued throughout the production leading to a mixed bag of a show. More clarification on that thought later.
The show, directed by Gary Oesch, is set to close December 23, 2018.
There are shows that I believe get rave reviews, awards, and heralded as classics because, at some point, "true theatre people" aren't allowed to not like them. If you bring up Oklahoma, Hello, Dolly, or The Sound of Music, and don't fawn over it for hours, you are expected to turn in your theatre card and walk away from all conversations thereafter. My Fair Lady, as a musical, falls into this category for me.

For three weeks in September and going into October, the South Bend Civic Theatre brings Legally Blonde the Musical to the Wilson Theatre. The international award-winning musical based on the movie, Legally Blonde, explodes on the stage with memorable songs and dynamic dances. Director Carys Kresny collaborates with Music Director Geoffrey Carter, Choreographer Karen Pajor, and the ensemble cast to take the audience through Elle's fabulously fun journey. This hilarious, fun, and heart-warming musical runs from September 16th through October 2nd at the Wilson Theatre. It will be so much fun it should be illegal!
Based on the beloved, timeless film, this heartwarming musical adaptation features many of Irving Berlin's finest songs showcased in a book by David Ives and Paul Blake. World War II veterans Bob Wallace and Phil Davis have become a successful song-and-dance team. When they meet a duo of beautiful singing sisters, they follow them to a Christmas show at a Vermont lodge, run by their former army commander. Featuring dazzling standards such as "Blue Skies," "I Love a Piano, "How Deep is the Ocean," this show will have you dreaming of a "White Christmas."
