taxdeductible theatre has announced its first-ever, full-ength production, #hero; a new play developed in collaboration between our community and company.

Since 2006, taxdeductible theatre has produced The Dare Project-a recurring evening of ten minute plays, written on a dare. Over that time, the company has created nearly 100 world premiere short plays developed from a raw idea-a dare-submitted by our audience. Over a two month process, our company members use their idea as a foundation to build the play from the ground up, working in collaboration with one another, and informed by the community's commission. Using that project as a laboratory, the company has built a new method of creating collaborative theatrical works, in which the voice of the company and the voice of the community are brought to life, together.

#hero also began with an idea from our community: "We fight about the little things, so we can ignore the big things." That dare was the basis of a year and a half of development, which involved the entire company working from that starting point and producing works in progress so the audience could see the play begin to take shape. All of that work has led to our premiere in Long Island City, tonight, February 22.

#hero follows NYPD Officer Norman Burrows and his wife Grace. After Norman saves a woman who falls on the subway tracks, he becomes a social media sensation. As his public profile grows, their private life unravels, until the hero must expose his own myth.

Have we lost touch with ourselves in a hyper-connected world? Do our public acts define our private lives? It's easy to connect with everyone; but is it worth it to connect with anyone?
